Sheepstor Transcribed from - Morris and Co.'s Commercial Directory and Gazetteer. 1870 Please notify me of any errors Contact.    Transcribed by Deborah O'BRIEN Checked by Val HENDERSON   Page 890     SHEEPSTOR (or SHEPSTOR) is a parish and village in the union of Tavistock, containing, by the census of 1861, 98 inhabitants, and 3595 acres; in the deanery of Tamerton, archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Roborough, South Devonshire; 12 miles north-east by north from Plymouth, 8 south-east by south from Tavistock, and 4¼ east from Horrabridge, which is the nearest railway station. The church (dedication unknown) is an ancient edifice, in the Early English style of architecture, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, a curious transept and tower with a good peal of five bells: Sir Massey Lopez, Bart., owns the whole of the south aisle. The church has twice undergone restoration, the first time between the years 1797 and 1801, at the expense of the parishioners; and again, in 1862, by rate and subscription. There are still in existence the remains of a monument to the Elford family, who formerly owned the manor. The register dates from 1691. In the churchyard is a large and handsome tomb of Aberdeen granite to the memory of the late Sir James Brooke, Bart., well known as the Rajah of Sarawak, who had a seat in this parish, which is now owned by his newhew**, George Brooke, Esq. The living is a chapelry annexed to the vicarage of Bickleigh, in the incumbency of the Rev. Joseph Duncan Cork, M.A., joint annual value £266, with residence, in the patronage of Sir Massey Lopez, Bart. ; the Rev. William Yates Daykin*, LL.B., is the curate. There are some very valuable deposits of china clay in this parish. The Head Weir Pool of the Plymouth Leat is situated here. A school, with residence for the mistress has lately been built by public subscription. Sir Massey Lopez, Bart. (who is lord of the manor of Longstone), and Deeble Boger.
