Transcribed by Val HENDERSON Checked by Rita RAINBIRD Page 868   SYDENHAM DAMEREL (or SOUTH SYDENHAM) is a village and parish in Tavistock union, containing, by the census of 1861, 603 inhabitants, and 1413 acres; in the deanery of Tavistock, archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Lifton, South Devonshire; 5 miles north-west from Tavistock, on the east bank of the river Tamar, which divides it from Cornwall. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. William Henry D'Olier Purcell, B.A., had the tithes commuted at £160 per annum, with residence and 102 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of John Carpenter Garnier, Esq., J.P. The church is a small edifice, in the perpendicular style, dedicated to St. Mary, consisting of nave, chancel, and north aisle, with tower and five bells; it was reseated in 1864. The Bible Christians have a place of worship here, and there is a school for children of both sexes, which was erected in 1843, by John Carpenter-Garnier, Esq., who is lord of the manor and chief landowner.
