Transcribed by Val HENDERSON Not Checked TAMERTON FOLIOTT is a village and parish in Plympton St. Mary union containing, by the census of 1861, 1164 inhabitants, and 5150 acres; in the deanery of Tamerton, to which it gives the name, archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Roborough, South Devonshire; 5 miles north of Plymouth, and 10 miles south from Tavistock. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. George Frederick Arthur, M.A., had the tithes commuted, in 1839, for £339 10s. per annum, with residence and three acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor. The rectorial tithes were also commuted at £155 10s. per annum. The church is an ancient edifice, in the Perpendicular style, dedicated to St. Mary, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and a noble tower with six bells. There is an Endowed School for the education and clothing of twenty boys, and a Parochial School for children of both sexes. The poor have charitable bequests producing about £30 per annum. Walter Radcliffe, Esq., J.P., is lord of the manor, and he and Sir Massey Lopes, Bart., are the chief landowners. A cattle fair is held here annually on the third Wednesday in July. MARISTOW, the seat of Sir Massey Lopes, Bart., M.P., is situated in the midst of well wooded grounds, on the east bank of the river Tavey, 3 miles north from the village. It was twice visited, in 1789, by George III., Queen Caroline, and three of the Princesses, on their visit to Saltram.
