  TORBRIAN (or TORBRYAN) is a village and parish in Newton Abbot union, containing, by the census of 1861, 205 inhabitants, and 2010 acres; in the deanery of Ipplepen, archdeaconry of Totnes, hundred of Haytor, East Devonshire; 4 miles south-west from Newton Abbot, and 4 north fron Totnes. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. Charles Wolston, M.A., and LL.B., is valued at £344 per annum, with residence and 17 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the Wolston family. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, with two chapels in the aisles, each having a piscina. The chancel is separated from the nave by a handsome ancient screen in good preservation. There are also some fine specimens of stained glass windows. The poor have 20s. per annum out of the rectorial tithes of Cornworthy, which were left by John Peter in 1570.
