Contact.   Transcribed by Elizabeth Glover HOWARD Checked by Val HENDERSON Pages 276 - 277   UPOTTERY (or UP-OTTERY) is a parish and village in Honiton union, containing, by the census of 1861, 940 inhabitants, and 5830 acres; in the deanery of Dunkeswell, archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, hundred of Axminster, East Devonshire; 5 miles north from Honiton, 8 west from Chard, and 12 south-west from Taunton. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. George Lowe, B.A., had the tithes commuted, in 1841, at £431 per annum, with residence and 6 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to St. Mary, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and tower containing five bells. There is a National School for children of both sexes. The Baptists have a place of worship here. The poor have charitable bequests producing about £28 per annum, which is distributed at Easter and Christmas. A cattle fair is annually held here on the Wednesday before Lady Day. RAWRIDGE is a tithing forming part of this parish, about one mile south, and SMEATHARP is another tithing or hamlet, 1½ miles north-west. The MANOR HOUSE is a fine old mansion in the Elizabethan style, standing on an eminence; it is the seat of Viscount Sidmouth, J.P., who is lord of the manor and chief owner of the soil.
