WELCOMBE (or WELLCOMB) is a parish and village in Bideford union, containing, by the census of 1861, 209 inhabitants and 1751 acres ; in the deanery and hundred of Hartland, archdeaconry of Barnstaple, diocese of Exeter, North Devonshire ; 8 miles south-west from Hartland, and 10 north-east from Stratton, on the extreme borders of the county adjoining Cornwall, and on the coast of the British Channel. The name is derived from a well called Holy Well, which is believed to have been sunk, and a stone building erected over it by the Normans at the time the church was built, near to which it is situate. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Stephen Hawker, M.A., is valued at £71 per annum, and is in the patronage of Lord Clinton; it was formerly attached to the vicarage of Hartland, but was separated from that living in 1508. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicaed to St. Nectan, with tower and three bells. Lord Clinton is lord of the manor and chief owner of the soil.
