Transcribed by Val HENDERSON Checked by William COOKE Page 415 YARNSCOMBE is a village and parish in Torrington union, containing, by the census of 1861, 423 inhabitants, and 3047 acres; in the deanery and archdeaconry of Barnstaple, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Hartland, North Devonshire; 5½ miles north-east from Torrington, 4 west from Umberleigh Station on the North Devon Railway, 8 south from Barnstaple, and 10 west from South Molton. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Henry Fowler Baker, B.A., had the tithes commuted, in 1840, at £136 10s. per annum with residence and 30 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor. The rectorial tithes were also commuted at £132 per annum. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to St. Andrew, consisting of nave, chancel, and aisle, with tower and four bells; it was repaired in 1852, and a vestry added. An estate producing £14 a year is vested in trustees, and the amount expended in the repairs of the church, and towards the support of the school. The poor have £2 per annum left by Edward Warren in 1693, and £2 per annum distributed in bread. The Hon. Mark Kerr Rolle is lord of the manor, impropriator of the rectorial tithes, and chief landowner.
