The Department of Libraries (DOL) has their entire catalog of holdings online. To accessed it, go to http://dol.state.vt.us:8002/dolcat.You can search by title, author, subject, keyword and call number.
Some materials are stored in a locked rare book room (the Vermont Room, see below) with independent climate control. Patrons can arrange admittance to this room through the reference staff. Self-service photocopying is available at $0.10 per page. Materials are available through interlibrary loan as long as duplicate copies are owned. The Vermont Department of Libraries (DOL) maintains a major Vermontiana collection with extensive collections of Vermont legal and state government documents, Vermont town histories, and Vermont newspapers on microfilm.
Books:Approximately 15,000 Vermont titles dating from the 1770s to the present covering all aspects of Vermont history. The bulk of the collection is manually cataloged. All acquisitions beginning in 1985 are included in an online catalog available to the public. Older materials are in a separate collection within the rare book room.
Newspapers:Current subscriptions to Vermont daily and weekly newspapers except "shoppers." The DOL has the major collection of Vermont newspapers on microfilm in the state including some of the earliest known publications.
Serials/Periodicals:We collect Vermont newsletters and periodicals, particularly serials published by Vermont state agencies.
Documents:We attempt to add two copies of every document published by a Vermont state agency. All current acquisitions are being added to our online catalog. We have a significant collection of Vermont town reports in bound volumes through 1982 with 1983 to current in microfiche. We have a limited number of other local government documents. We have similar runs of Vermont Supreme Court opinions and briefs as well as opinions of state regulatory boards.
Maps/Atlases:We own a set of Beers's atlases as well as several hundred maps of individual towns. We also have a set of aerial photographs for the state.
Data files:The Department receives all U.S. Census records for Vermont, many of which are distributed in CD-ROM or computer tape format. The Department provides online public access to a variety of Vermont state government databases.
This is a climate controlled room where a wealth of resources are housed to protect them. The room contains a number of primary sources including 19th century county atlases which contain survey and real estate information -- i.e. the locations of many of the homes and businesses of the people of the area. These are a treasure for any one wishing to find the exact location of their ancestor's homes. The most popular of these were published by Frederick W. Beers between 1869 and 1878.
