Ignatius Adams comes to area

Summit Tavern (log structure) established by Samuel Lemon

1832

Skew Arch Bridge is built at intersection of Huntingdon, Cambria and Indiana Pikes

1834

Opening of Portage Railroad; Lemon House is built; Post office is established at Summit

1838

St. Aloysius Catholic Church established

1847

Presbyterian Church established

1851

Summitville established; PIKE School built near Summit

1854

Pennsylvania Railroad built west of Summitville; Dr. R. M. S. Jackson establishes Alleghany Mountain Health Institute and moved the Mountain House from Duncansville

1855

MO Tower opens to direct railroad traffic

1856

Robert E. Peary born

1862

Cottages built around the Mountain House (many still survive today)

1866

Callan House built (has operated under The Station Inn & Commercial Hotel)

1880

Mountain House expands to resort

1882

Summitville borough abandoned

1886

Mine shaft built at Cresson Shaft

1892

New school building built

1893

Cresson Township formed

1894

Presbyterian Church built at 3rd & Keystone

1897

Mountain House abandoned, Mount Aloysius Academy for Young Ladies (Sisters of Mercy) moves from Loretto

1902

Pennsylvania Coal & Coke Co. formed by uniting Wester Coal & Coke, Mitchell & Assoc., & Berwind

1903

Cresson Public School built (Keystone & 4th St.). An addition in 1912. Most commonly remember as the high school

1906

Cresson borough organized, Sankertown borough established

1908

Volunteer Fire Company established, St. Francis Xavier Church established on Powell Ave.

1909

St. John's Orphanage for boys established

1910

New railroad station built east of the Pike

1912

Cresson State Sanitorium for Tuberculosis built

1916

Mountain House torn down

1917

St. Mary's Orphage for girls established

1920

Municipal Building on Second St. built

1923

St Francis Xavier School built on site of the old opera house on Powell Ave.

1925

St. Aloysius Church destroyed by windstorm

1936

Women's Club of Cresson chartered, New culvert for Rt. 22 built (replaces smaller stone one)

1949

Cresson Shaft mining operations closed

1951

Cresson Lions Club formed

1952

Cresson Joint School District established

1953

Cresson Industrial Development Association established

1957

New St. Aloysius Church dedicated

1958

New High School built on Linden Avenue

1963

St. Mary's-St. John's Orphanages closed

1964

Cresson Sanitorium closes, Cresson State School & Hospital opens there

1968

Old St. John's Home destroyed by fire

1973

New Fire Hall built; Cambria County Community Action buys old Coal & Coke Company building

1975

Summit Grade School burns

1983

St. Mary's Home razed

1992

Visitor's Center for Portage Railroad dedicated.
