This small collection of cartes came from the remains of a small damaged album that once belonged to Mary Rutty (1860s-1870s). Missing from the album is a photo of Mr Birket Foster, the artist, brother of Mr Dodshon Foster & brother in law of his wife Mary Anne Rutty (see Myles Birket Foster 1825-1899 in Biographical Dictionaries)

Other families here are the Marshall, Vearney (Verey), Penny, Groome, Lucas and Wheeler. Mrs Penny lived at Poole Dorset, U.K. and the Rev John Rutty.

MARY RUTTY AND HER ALBUM

Note: Dates indicated with a tilde (~) should be read as about or give or take a year as they are derived from ages shown on censuses. Dates without the tilde have been verified in some other way - from a register index entry, copy certificate or other document. There is a tendency for the families around this time to name children after parents or grandparents; this can give rise to confusion (there are three generations of John Rutty, for instance). Where there may be any risk of confusion, I will always append the year of birth to a name.

The album belonged to Mary Louisa Rutty (b~1850 Paddington). She was the daughter of John (later Rev John) and Rachel Rutty. To understand the relationships between the various individuals in the album, I will start with Marys fathers (Johns) generation.

I can trace four members of Johns family: Eliza (b~1818 Paddington), Mary Ann (b~1819 Paddington), John himself (b~1822 Marylebone) and Louisa (b~1825 Marylebone). I cannot trace their parents. However, Johns marriage certificate shows his father to be another John Rutty, a timber merchant. Dealing first with Johns sisters:

Eliza Rutty married George Verey, a brewer, in 1839. George was born ~1811 in Bletchingley, Surrey. In the 1841 Census, they are living in Willesden; Elizas sister Mary Ann and Mary Foster (see later) are living with them. The Vereys stayed in Willesden or Kilburn, and clearly knew the Fosters and Garles well (see next paragraphs).

Mary Ann Rutty married Dodshon Foster, a beer and ale merchant, in 1849. Dodshon was born ~1816 in North Shields, Northumberland. Dodshons brother was Myles Birket Foster (b 1825 North Shields d 1899), a Victorian engraver and water colour artist of some note. Their father was also Myles Birket Foster (b~1785 Sedburgh?, Yorkshire), who was also in the brewing business. I have also found Mary (b~1822) Foster (see previous paragraph), Dodshon and Myles sister, but do not know what happened to her after 1851. Dodshon lived in Paddington and then Brighton, returning to Paddington by 1871; he died in 1876, age 60.

Louisa Rutty was at a boarding school in Stoke Newington in 1841 and living with Dodshon Foster and family in Paddington in 1851. That year she married John Garle (b~1815 Paddington). He is a land & houses proprietor. In 1861 the Garles are living next door to William Verey, a brewer (probably George Vereys brother). In 1871, John and Louisa Garle are living in Bromley, and George and Eliza Verey and their family are staying with them.

To return to our central characters, John Rutty (~1822) married Rachel Lucas in High Wycombe on 15 October 1845. Rachel was b~1823 in Westminster. The Lucas family are important in all that follows, so a brief history is helpful:

Richard Lucas (b~1792 Westminster d 1874) married Elizabeth Edmonds (b~1794 High Wycombe d 1877). They had at least 10 children - 3 sons and 7 daughters. The first 5 were born in Westminster - Thomas (b~1818), Elizabeth (b~1820), Rachel (b~1823), Priscilla (b~1824) and Benjamin (b~1825). The family moved to High Wycombe in the late 1820s where the remaining 5 children were born - Emily (b~1828), Arthur (b 1829), Louisa (b~1832), Mary (b~1837) and Ann (or Annie b~1840). Richard, and later his sons Thomas and Benjamin, ran a brewery in High Wycombe.

John and Rachel Rutty had 5 children, all born in Paddington: John (b~1847), Elizabeth (b~1848), William (b~1849), Mary Louisa - the owner of the album - (b~1850) and Rachel (b 1851). In the 1851 Census, they are in Paddington and Mary Louisa is 9 months old. Living with them are Rachels brother, Arthur Lucas, and sister, Louisa Lucas. John Rutty is a timber merchant and brick maker. Later in 1851, Rachel died during, or as a result of, giving birth to their last child, Rachel (1851). Following this, Louisa Lucas remained with John Rutty as a housekeeper and companion for the rest of his life and would, effectively, have been mother to the children. By the 1861 Census, the family have moved to High Wycombe, close to the rest of the Lucas family. In 1861, John is still shown as a timber merchant. By 1871, the household is John, Louisa Lucas and Mary Louisa. Now John is shown as formerly a timber merchant - he has given up his business. In 1881 and 1891, he, Louisa and Mary are in Barnstaple, Devon where he is Rev John Rutty, Minister of Barnstaple Independent Church or Chapel (later Congregational Church). By 1901 he has retired back to High Wycombe with Louisa and Mary, and died there in 1903, age 81. Mary Rutty is still unmarried, age 50, in 1901; it seems probable she never married.

In 1901, next door to the Rev John Rutty in High Wycombe is his son, John (~1847), and family. John (~1847) initially appears be in the drapery trade, but by 1881 he is living in Great Marlow, Bucks and is a coal merchant. John married Fances Alice Hunt in 1881, the daughter of a Barnstaple ironmonger. His father, Rev John Rutty, conducted the marriage service with another Congregational Minister, R A Bertram at the Independent Chapel, Barnstaple. However, Frances died only two years later on 9 May 1883, age 30. By the late 1880s, John (~1847) has remarried Annie (b~1860 Stockwell, London) and has settled in High Wycombe and is a coal merchant. The death of a John Rutty, age 92, is registered in Wycombe in 1938 (which ties up with a birth year of ~1847).

Marys sister Rachel (1851) married Robert Wheeler (b~1849 High Wycombe) some time in the late 1870s (their first son was born about 1879). Robert was an MA Oxford and the son of another Robert Wheeler of High Wycombe who was a banker, brewer and maltster and Mayor of High Wycombe several times. Robert and Rachel moved to Calne, Wilts by 1881 where Richard was the Minister of Calne Free Church. They did not move directly from High Wycombe to Calne since their first son was born in Preston (near Brighton, Sussex).

To complete the history of others in the photographs, Marys Aunt Ann(ie) Lucas (1840) married Henry Abbott Groome (b 1843 Kings Langley, Herts) in 1867. Henry and Annie had one child, Ethel (b~1869 High Wycombe) before Henry died in 1869, age 26. Henry was a brewer; the Groome family ran the Kings Langley brewery.

Marys Uncle Benjamin Lucas (~1825), married Christina Sutherland MacDonald (b~1828 Kennington), who was a governess to a High Wycombe family, in 1854. They had several children, including Richard MacDonald Lucas (b~1870 High Wycombe).

THE PICTURES

The pictures date from the 1860s through into the 1880s. Some can be dated very precisely from their content. Some of the captions were written long after this - for instance, John Ruttys death is noted as 1938 - and others are inaccurate, so they may not have been written by Mary herself. If some of the notes were written later by other family members (remembering that Mary never married), then it is possible that the relationships quoted are misleading.

Harry Garle, John Hearvey, Great Uncle John Rutty 'Capt Beech' (Keswick, Lake District) - It seems unlikely this caption was written by Mary Rutty. Her Great Uncle would be her Grandfathers brother, and since her Grandfather was a John Rutty, it seems improbable he had a brother called John! There was a Henry (Harry) Garle (Marys cousin), born ~1854 and a John Verey (another cousin), born ~1844. If these are the two younger men, then the picture would date from around 1870 and the John Rutty pictured could be Marys father, Rev John Rutty. Capt Beech is a mystery.

Mr Geo. Vearney [Verey]: This is likely to be George Verey (~1811), Marys Uncle.

Mary & Rachel Rutty, 2nd and 3rd daughters of the Rev John Rutty: Since Mary was born ~1850 and Rachel ~1851, this picture is likely to date from the 1860s.

?John Rutty: The subject of this picture appears to be the same as the second picture said to be John Rutty - see the comments on that picture below.

Great great aunt Mary Marshall & two children (nee Lucas): Still to be identified; however, it is doubtful if this is Marys Great Great Aunt - the subject looks far too young. The picture is by the Lucas Brothers of 3 St Johns Wood Road. The brothers operated from 1863 to 1865 and were John Templeton Lucas and Arthur Lucas. John T Lucas is shown as an artist in 1871 and later. Arthur Lucas lived in the family home at 22 St Johns Wood Road and is shown in later censuses as a fine art publisher. Their father was John Lucas, born ~1808 in Westminster, who lived in St Johns Wood Road back to the earliest census in 1841. He is described as a portrait or historical artist. (In 1841, next door is another artist, Edwin Landseer!). There seems to be a strong possibility that John Lucas was related to Richard Lucas (and hence to Mary Rutty), but there were a number of Lucas families in Westminster about that time, so that cannot be confirmed definitely.

Richard Lucas: Marys Grandfather, brewer in High Wycombe.

Donald Lucas son of Bery Lucas: There are no Donald or Bery Lucases nation-wide in the censuses of around this time. This is probably a son of Marys Uncle, Benjamin Lucas, possibly Richard MacDonald Lucas (b~1870).

Aunt Groome & Ethel Groome: Marys Aunt Annie Groome (nee Lucas) and her daughter Ethel (b~1869) - this dates the picture very closely.

Louie Verey, Rev Lorimer, Mr & Mrs Dodshon Foster: This is Marys Aunt Mary Ann and Uncle Dodshon Foster. Louie is probably Marys cousin, Louisa Verey born ~1841. Louisa is shown in the 1871 Census living with her Aunt and Uncle Foster. Rev Lorimer has not been traced.

Ethel Groome: Marys cousin, daughter of Annie Lucas and Henry Abbott Groome, born ~1869.

John Rutty B.18.7.1841 D.1938: There is little doubt this is Marys brother, John Rutty the coal merchant and not Marys father, Rev John Rutty. There is an error in the date of birth, possibly a transposition of digits. John was born ~1847 and died in 1938, age approximately 92. Between the mid 1870s and mid 1880s, John lived in Great Marlow from where this picture originates.

Could be Rachel Wheeler, nee Rutty: If so, this is Marys sister after her marriage to Robert Wheeler.
