VERE-House of Lords (Westiminister, London, England) Arguments of opposition concerning the motion to commit the bill for repeal of the Stamp Act; the negative argued for upholding the 1766 prerogatives of the Crown because Parliament Mar. 11 has sole control of legislation; the Stamp Act was passed with little Parliamentary opposition; amendment would be preferable to repeal; power of taxation must be exercised without partiality; the tax amounted to a shilling per head per year; unless Parliament levies the tax it cannot be justly apportioned; the colonists object to the principle of taxation without representation and to the Navigation Laws; these doctrines may spread to other British subjects and lead to the destruction of the Empire; submission to the colonists will injure the British merchants; if the Government had acted resolutely the opposition in the colonies could have been stopped; to sacrifice the sovereignty of the Realm now will lead to greater defiance in the future. C.D.S. 4 pp. 33.4 cm. x 21 cm. Slightly mutilated. VERE-House of Lords, Westminister, London, England Arguments of oppostion concerning the repeal of the Stamp Act; repeal will encourage the 1766 colonists to claim the sole right of legislation; the taxes collected were to be spent in North America; new Admirality Courts have been set up at convenient places; they refute the argument that the Stamp Act was tried and failed; in the future British officials will be subservient to the popular will; repeal will encourage opposition to all laws in Britain as well as in the colonies; repeal will 'Shake the Basis of Equality, and of that Original Compact, upon which every Society is founded. VIA, HENRY-The following is a brief account of the Gentry family: ... Prior to 1778 David and Martin were owners of land on Doyle's River, which they afterwards sold to Benajah Brown. A son of one of these brothers probably was Richard Gentry, who in 1784 married Jane, daughter of James Harris, and removed to Kentucky, and whose descendants held a reunion at Crab Orchard in August 1898. And from one of them in all likelihood came George Gentry, who died in 1818, whose home was not far from Free Union, whose wife's name was Elizabeth, and whose children were James, George, William, Frances, the wife of Nathaniel Tate, Austin, Aaron, Christopher, Martha, the wife of John Walton, Elizabeth, the wife of Edward Ballard, and Nancy, the wife of Edward Walton. The children of Christopher and his wife Sarah, were Martha, the wife of Joel Maupin, Mary, the wife of HENRY VIA, Frances, the wife of Thomas Gibson, Elizabeth, the wife of James Dunn, Paschal, Henry, and Dicey, the wife of Garrett White.
