John BROWN (early 1800s - 6 Aug 1865) was born to John and Dorcas (Buchanan) BROWN, living on the farm that John's parents, John and Mary (Patton) BROWN had established around 1805 -1809, when they came from Pennsylvania to settle on the Dry Fork of the Whitewater River near Venice, OH in Butler County. At first called "Paddy's Run", the town went through several name changes, to "Glendower", to "New London", and finally to "Shandon".
On 4 January 1844, John married Martha Jane GEORGE, (7 Nov 1825 - 1879) the oldest child of Joshua and Catherine (Thompson Gough) GEORGE. Joshua George had died around 1834 or 1836 during an epidemic when Martha Jane was about 10 years old, so for much of their childhood, Martha Jane, her three year older half-brother Charles GOUGH, and her four younger brothers, Enoch "Jack", Andrew Thompson, Reuben Handley, and David Wilson GEORGE, were raised by their twice widowed mother, Catherine Thompson Gough George. John and Martha Jane BROWN continued farming on his grandfather's farm and raising their seven children. John died 6 August 1865, and Martha Jane, who is believed to have been buried in the George Cemetery on Dwyer Road, died sometime in 1879. |
