On March 28, 1925, Frank Cornelius Gerling (1894-1969) was awarded "The Distinguished Service Cross for Extraordinary Heroism." It was awarded for military operations at Hill No. 253 during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive that occurred in France on October 8th and 9th in 1918. He was serving as a Private First Class with Company I of the 38th Infantry, 3rd Division of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I.
