Wagstaffe family Ancestry 1850- Information on the family of John Wagstaff supplied by his descendent Helen Sofchalk
That of the family of Catherine (Wagstaff) Lewis supplied by her descendent Dianne Tuttle
In gathering information on the descendents of Thomas Wagstaff, I was helped by several cousins still living in the area, notably the two Peter Wagstaffe`s (one the grandson of David b. 1880 and the other the grandson of Edward b. 1884).

Notes:  The first three children were born in Neath. The family are at Woodland Row, Briton Ferry in the 1851 Census.
John immigrated April,1852.Margaret arrived Baltimore 21 Sept 1852 on the Ship, Mary Hale from Liverpool with sons Edward and Thomas and a 22 -year old woman whose last name was James.  Annie Elizabeth was born in Baltimore and Margaret Jane in Maryland. By 1857 the family were in Niles, Ohio where the other children were born.
Margaret did not speak any English in the 27 years she lived in the USA. Helen records that her grandmother had to learn Welsh in order to talk to her. Helen is in possession of Margaret`s Will which left everything to John including land in Vienna Township. John remarried to  Elizabeth Round Bland, widow of Joseph Bland probably about  1883 as Edward became guardian of 13 yr old Rees in that year.
Helen has found several obituaries which show that the sons were to follow in the family trade of Mason with their work diversifying into furnace brickbuilding associated with the various steel rolling mills in the area.  One obituary is that of John ,who died  19th June 1896 :  " John Wagstaff, one of Niles` most esteemed and respected Welsh citizens, died yesterday afternooon at 4 o`clock from the effects of old age ....He was one of the first Welsh citizens to come to Niles and was always interested in the prosperity of the city. A wife and nine children survive him." Youngstown Vindicator, 20 June 1896.  Margaret,  John and many of the family are buried in Union Cemetery, Niles.
In 1890 Richard Johns, husband of Annie visited Wales and looked up his Wagstaff relatives in the Neath area. The diary in the possession of Helen desribes his time in the Neath area.

The first child William was born in Neath, all the others in Llantwit Parish, Melincryddan. In 1861 they are living at Rotten Row next to Margaret`s parents. In 1881 they are recorded at Edward`s Road and in 1891 at School Road. After some searching we were able to identify 19, School Road as being located in "Rockfield" just behind School Road. The address was sometimes given as School Road and sometinmes as Rockfield Terrace. In Summer 1999 the house has just been renovated. Thomas is referred to in several local Directories. His Will leaves the house to his daughters and refers to the house as "Wellfield House".
Of the children William is living in Llangenech in 1881 and 1891, working as a Iron Refiner. His son Edward moves to Maesteg area and his descendents later moved to Australia. Edward is recorded in the 1871 census as an "imbecile" and died at age 20 years. Could he have been a Downes Syndrome child? Thomas has many descendents in the Neath area. I was unable to find him in 1891. One of his descendents has referred to a civilian medal which he was awarded and thinks that he may have moved away before returning to the area. There is a picture in one of the "Old Neath in Pictures" which shows a Mrs Wagstaff, who I think is Thomas` wife. She is pictured at a harvest festival at Penydre Mission.
David is my g. grandfather. He lived next door to his father in 1891 in School Road and later moved to Wilmot Street in Melincryddan. He is also recorded in several Trade Directories as a Mason and later became a Clerk of works for Neath Council.
Charles married but had no children. He was a "Sweet Manufacturer" and had business premises in the Melyn and also at Windsor Road and Neath Market,
John Henry moved away from the area- probably Newport, but in Thomas`s will, where he is named as executor, he is stated to be living in Barry.
The two girls mentioned in the Will- Lucy and Matilda -
later married but I have not been able to trace them.
Descendents of Thomas Wagstaff  of Melincryddan

David & Catherine were at Aberwenffrwd in Baglan Higher in 1851 and also at Baglan higher in 1861. He was a  Collier and probably working at one of the Tonmawr mines. By 1871 they are at Clyne in the Parish of Llantwit where they are keeping a Public House called the "Bottle & Glass". By 1881 they have moved across the valley to Ynysgollen where they are keeping the "Ynysgollen Arms" later to become known as the "Rock & Fountain".
In 1890, Richard Johns (husband of Annie Wagstaff d. of John above) visited Wales and his diary describes his visits to Aunt Kitty at the "Rock & Fountain" in Aberdulais. The diary says that two sons were away in America. We were later to be contacted by Dianne Tuttle the granddaughter of one of these sons, Edward Wagstaff Lewis.
Edward emigrated, about 1885, to Peterton, Kansas. He was followed in 1887 by his sweetheart ("cariadferch")
Elizabeth Hopkins. They married 5th Nov. 1887. Edward worked as a miner in Peterton until 1895. Two boys were to die there and Dianne has located their gravestone.
On Aug. 1, 1895. Edward  Lewis left Peterton for Ellwood, Ind.. where he had secured employment in a tin mill. The family followed shortly. In the 1920`s they moved to Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio where they lived out their last years in .
Edward`s brother William also emigrated to Peterton.
In 1965 Dianne`s Aunt Annie visited Wales and looked up the descendents of those siblings who had remained in Wales. She visited the "Rock & Fountain" and Melincourt Chapel, where David & Catherine Lewis are buried. In addition to photographs of these places Dianne has one of Alderman Davies` school, where Edward was educated and one of Rosser Street, Neath, where some of the family were living in 1965.
She also seems to have made contact with the family of Jenkin Rees, the son of Edward`s oldest sister Ann.
She had married Edward Rees, who was the owner of Gyfylchi Farm near Tonmawr
