Josiah Steffa for many years a Resident of Byron, died on Thursday June 11, at East Moline at the age of 82 years. Mr. Steffa had been in failing health for a number of years.
He was born at Mount Morris and was the son of Joseph and Sarah Ann Steffa. While residing in Byron he was the janitor of the Byron Public School building many years and also custodian of the Community House several years. His wife, Eliza, and several brothers and sisters preceded him in death. An adopted daughter, Mrs. Fred Himert, and four grandchildren of Byron; a brother, Fred, of Loves Park, and a sister, Mrs. Louis Fouch of Oregon, survive him.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Himert on Saturday afternoon, the Rev. w. j. Hopkins, pastor of the United Church, officiated. Burial was in Silver Creek Cemetery.

Josiah married Eliza Catherine PIKE OCT 12, 1881 in Ogle Co., IL. Eliza was born AUG 19, 1861 in Mt. Morris, Ogle County, IL, died JUL 22, 1932 in Byron, Ogle Co., Illinois at age 70, and was buried in Silver Creek Cemetery, Leaf River, Ogle Co., IL.

Mrs. Elizabeth Pike Steffa, wife of Josiah Steffa, passed away at her Byron home on Friday evening July 22, 1932, of an illness due to paralytic stroke suffered some months ago.
Mrs. Steffa had been a resident of Byron for forty years and was also a native of Ogle County. She was born at Mount Morris on August 19, 1861, a daughter of Mr. And Mrs. David W. Pike. She is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Fred Himert, four brothers--- George, Melvin, William, and Arthur, and a sister, Mrs. Edith Lacy of Myersville, Mo. Another sister, Mrs. Ellen Rock of Navarre, Kansas, preceded her in death but two days.
Funeral services were held from the home on Sunday afternoon, and were in charge of Rev. L.M. Isaacs. Burial was in Silver Creek Cemetery.

Funeral services for Samuel Steffa, 316 1/2 South Winnebago Street, who died suddenly Saturday at the Emerson-Brantingham plant will be held this afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Congregational Church in Byron, the Rev. Mr. Crickett and the Rev. Mr. Zackman officiating, and burial will be in Silver Creek Cemetery south of Leaf River.
Mr. Steffa was born in Rockvale township, Ogle County, Oct 26, 1857, and came to Rockford about 15 years ago from Byron. He married Sarah Miller from Maryland, in 1881. She died in 1918.
Seven children were born to them, of who three preceded him. The surviving children are Floyd L. Steffa and Mrs. Charles P. Lizer, Rockford, with whom he had made his home with since his wife's death, and Mrs. Ralph H. Bachelder, Aurora, Ill. There are two step- children, Russel G. Miller, of Kings, and Mrs. William Ridgeway, Leaf River, Ill.; seven grandchildren and seven step- grandchildren, and six step- great- grandchildren.

Maybe adopted them, because their obits have the name of Steffa.

SAMUEL E. STEFFA

Samuel E. Steffa, a former resident of Byron, died very suddenly at the Emerson-Brantingham plant in Rockford Saturday noon while he was eating his lunch. The death was due to apoplexy.
Mr. Steffa was born in Rockvale Township on October 26, 1856. He married Sarah Miller in 1881 and made their home in Byron until her death in 1918, when he went to Rockford and lived with a daughter, Mrs. Chas. P. Lizer. He is survived by three children, Floyd L. and Mrs. Lizer of Rockford, and Mrs. R. H. Bachelder of Aurora, and two step-children, Russell G. Steffa of Kings, and Mrs. Wm. Ridgeway of Leaf River, also by four brothers, Jesse I. of Byron, William and Luke of Rockvale, and Fred of Rockford, and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the Byron Congregational Church on Monday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. C. C. Crickette. The burial was in the Silver Creek Cemetery, south of Leaf River on Monday afternoon. The arrangements were considerably interfered with by the storm.

Samuel married Sarah C. MILLER DEC 15, 1881 in Lanark, Carroll Co., IL. Sarah was born in FEB 1859 in Franklin Co., PA and died in 1918 in Rockford, Winnebago Co., IL at age 59.

Edith married Charles P LIZER JUL 4, 1901 in Byron, Ogle Co., Illinois. Charles was born NOV 13, 1878 in Leaf River Twp., Ogle Co., IL, died MAY 11, 1952 in Rockford, Winnebago Co., IL at age 73, and was buried in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Ogle Co., IL.

Charles Lizer was born Nov. 13, 1878, at Leaf River, the son of William and Isabelle Lizer. He died May 11,1952.
Charles and Edith Maude Steffa were married July 4, 1901. They lived in Byron for a while and then moved to Rockford. To them were born Kenneth, Charles, Fay, and the twins. Beryl was adopted into the family.
He was a machinist by trade, having spent 33 years with the IngerBoll Milling Machine company in Rockford. The Lizers joined the Congregational church in Byron in July, 1901. She passed away on May 3, 1951 and her, husband followed her on May 11,1952. He is survived by his son Kenneth and two children, Kenneth Junior and Stephen, of Rockford; his sisters: Sarah, Mrs. Franklin Lutz of Byron and Mary, often called Molly Angel of Rockford; his two brothers: Daniel of Shirland and James of Pecatonica; nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The service in his memory was held in the United Church of Byron, Tuesday afternoon, May 13, at 2 o'clock, with interment in the Byron cemetery. Mrs. Clifford Swanson of Rockford sang, accompanied by Mrs. Harold Yost of Byron. The message was given by the Rev. Clifford Swanson of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd of Rockford; the Rev. James H. Hagerty of the United Church of Byron conducted the service.

Another name for Elizabeth was Bessie.

General Notes: Mrs Elizabeth Steffa passed away at 12:30 p.m. at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford were she had been a patient since the preceding Wednesday.
She was born in Hagerstown, Maryland, May 1, 1877, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gruber, and came to Illinois at nine years of age. She was married to Nehemiah Steffa who preceded her in death fourteen years ago.
Surviving are seven children; Floyd and Alva of Rockford, Mrs Leta McNames of Byron, Lawrence serving with the Armed Forces in Australia, Mrs Leila Hays, Mrs Geneva Mammenga and Orville Steffa of Oregon, two brothers, Garfield and Elmer Gruber, a sister, Mrs. Minnie Sudbury of Pine Rock Township, and eleven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. J.E. Dale officiating, and burial was made in Silver Creek cemetery.

Survivors include siblings: Floyd, Alvin, Orville, Leta McNames, Lelia Hays, Geneva Mammenga. He was a WW 11 Vet.

Rockford Register Republic, 2-20-1950
Lawrence L. Steffa, 44, Oregon, died yesterday at Hines Veterans Hospital, where he had been a patient for the last seven months. He was the brother of Floyd Steffa, 407 North Johnston Ave.
A veteran of World War !, He served with the Army in the Pacific theater from 1943 to 1945. He was a life long resident of Ogle County.
Also surviving are two other brothers, Alvin and Orville, Oregon, and three sisters, Mrs. Leta McNames, Byron, and Mrs. Leila Hayes and Mrs. Geneva Mammenga, Oregon.
Arrangements are being completed at the Farrell Funeral Home in Oregon.

Fred Steffa, retired farmer, died at 2:20 p.m. yesterday, after an illness of two weeks, at the home of his great-niece, Mrs. Susan Doyle, 1228 Elm Street.
He was born Sept. 1, 1867 in Rock Vale Twp, Ogle County. On Dec. 29, 1904, he married Iva Coy, who died in 1926. He farmed in the vicinity of Mount Morris for many years. When he retired he moved to Rockford about 20 years ago.
Surviving are two great-nieces, Mrs Doyle and Mrs. Charles Lizer, both of Rockford.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Rock Of Ages Funeral Home in Byron. Burial will be at Silver Creek cemetery near Leaf River.

There was no date except 1944 and no paper name, but I found this at the Oregon, Ogle Co., IL library in a book marked area obits.

Mrs. Iva Steffa wife of Fred Steffa, 3439 Dale Ave, Loves Park died at 8 o'clock Sunday morning at St. Anthony Hospital. Mrs. Steffa was born July 29, 1886.
There are no children. The funeral will be Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at Loves Park, and burial will be in Silver Creek Cemetery Ogle County.
