Ruth Kesselring Barriage
The Kesselring family came from Germany Pennsylvania then to Frederick County, Maryland in 1700's. Charles P. Kesselring, the seventh of ten children of Peter and Elizabeth (Marker) Kesselring, came to Illinois in the 1880's marrying Anna Sigler, daughter of Abraham Elizabeth (Harrison) Sigler, in 1891 at Oregon, Illinois Charles and Anna settled in Kings, Illinois having five children; Elmer. Mary, William, Paul and Ruth. Mary died in infancy. Anna died of consumption in 1902. Elmer, William and Paul stayed with the father till their teenage years. They were then hired out to local farmers for room and board. Elmer moved to Harvard, Illinois. William moved to Minnesota married Esther Berndt and had three children. Paul stayed in the Woosung area, marrying Dottie Cross and had two children Charles and Richard. Many descendants now live in Lee County. Ruth was only 21/2 years old and Charles couldn't take care of her, so the local Doctor in Oregon found a suitable home that would adopt Ruth. John and Josephine (Faessler) Lyons formally adopted Ruth Mae Kesselring and changed her middle name to Josephine. Charles came to visit his daughter often and remarried to Mrs. Zimmerman. Charles died in 1918
About 1910, Ruth contracted a mild form of tuberculosis and had to have rest. She was sent to Sinsinawa, Wisconsin to a convent boarding school. It was there where she got stronger and through whistling strengthened her lungs. She did bird whistling in amateur vaudeville on weekends. Ruth returned to Oregon within a few years. During the years in Oregon, her father, Charles Kesselring on visits would bring one or more of her brothers, so that they would know each other. Ruth learned sewing, cooking and farm life through the Lyons and Kesselring families, both having ties to farming families.
Ruth married Chester Barriage in 1920. They lived in Janesville afterwards. She tells the story of the best man going on the honeymoon and having to sleep in the hall of the hotel Chester had an Indian motorcycle with a sidecar. Ruth would climb in and ride through the muddy highways of the time. She told me that later on they had a car that had an awning and they would stop for the night along side of the road. They would fix the meals, sometimes using the hot water from the engine to pluck feathers of a chicken, then straining the water to put back into the radiator.
In March of 1921, Rogene was born in Janesville, Wisconsin. Ruth's father, John C. Lyons had a stroke in late 1920, after moving to Dixon, Illinois. He told his son-in-iaw, Chester, that he would give him down payment on a business in Dixon if he would bring his family from Janesville to Dixon. Chester came to Dixon and started a Battery Store on First Street. John Lyons died in June of 1921. (See Chester Barriage Biography)
The Barriages had a house in Dixon and in 1954 bought a house in Tampa, Florida also. They spent the winter months in Tampa and came to Illinois during the summer. Chester died in 1965 and Ruth after some crippling arthritis moved in with Rogene and John Boward on Depot Ave in the mid 1970's. Ruth saw her last birthday in Maplecrest Manor Nursing Home in Amboy. She died 10 Jun 1987 and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon.
