Letter sent to the Sun
From Fireman 1/c L. A. King comes the following letter from somewhere in the Pacific.
"Just thought I would drop you a few lines to tell you how much I enjoy recieving the Sun out here. Makes home seem closer to read the news from there.
"I'm on an LST, in case you don't know what they are, tale an oversized bathtub, mount on it an outboard motor, and arm it with an air rifle, you now have an LST. No kidding though, they are a pretty fair ship, chow is fair, but after eating one meal on the base I find out it's really best (on the LST).
"Most of these islands aren't nearly as pretty as they are in the movies. The one we're on now is really nice; the best one so far. Everything is green and looks alive, the soil is about like in the States, so they can grow about anything.
"went riding around one island in a jeep. In the native villages the girls and women dress almost as they do back home, even to lipstick. The houses are built of leaves and grass; all one room. No door or window; just cloth. We passed two women driving a water buffalo hitched to a two wheeled wooden cart. They never seem to be in a big hurry to get anywhere.
"Also saw a few prisoners brought in. They look well fed. Well it's chow time so guess I'd better close. A Reader, L. A. King, F. 1/c.

Searcy Class Of 1931 meets for 60th reunion (will have to look on Internet for year)
Friends and members of the Searcy High School Class of 1930 held their 60th anniversary reunion on April 13 at the Searcy Country Club.
Historical highlights were presented to the group to set the time frame of when the class graduated. This class graduated in the spring before New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt indicated he would attempt to get the Democratic nomination for president at the national convention. If successful in his bid for nomination, it was expected he would face a strong opposition from the incumbent President Herbert Hoover; a new device which would eventually take the place of matches for lighting cigarettes, had been introduced called the "Zippo Lighter.", The St. Louis Cardinals aquired a young boy who was said to be an amazing picture. The young man is nicknamed "Dizzy Dean"; a new device called the parking meter obtained a patent from the U. S. Patent Office; And on the local scene; Searcy Mayor Mark P. Jones reported the population of Searcy is now about 2000 people; Ray Yarnell purchased the Grisham Ice Cream Company and established the Yarnell Ice Cream Company; The Red Cross drive in White County more than doubled its 1930 quota with donations totaling $483.89; and the Security Bank has just obtained a charter and opened its doors with capital stock of $50,000 and the surplus of $ 5,000
The Searcy Class who made there home in Searcy are: Carthel ANGEL, Elbert KITTS, Stella PRICE, Margaret FIELDS FOSTER, Willard Albright SMITH, Maurice THOMPSON, Jessie Ruth WALDEN WALKER, William B. WALKER, Clyde BURKETT, and Letty BAKER GENTRY. Others include Jetty WALKER MANESS of Little Rock, Florriedean WAKENIGHT LYLE of Benton, and Frances PATTON BAKER, of Fairbanks Alaska.
The tables were decorated in the traditional red and black with a special arrangement of red carnations at the head table in rememberance of those of the class who are deceased
Special guests of honor were the surviving teachers: Irene FORREST, Marjorie ARMSTRONG, and Dorthy DELLINGER YOUNG, who were presented a red rose bud. Other roses were presented to Frances PATTON BAKER for traveling the longest distance and to Elbert and Pauline KITTS who have the largest family with nine children, 22 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.
About 50 guests were present. Maurice THOMPSON served as emcee.
Former Camp Educators to be Recognized at Japanese American National Museum Gala Dinner Feb. 5 </events/2005/02>
Los Angeles
Over 20 former teachers who were instrumental in the lives of young Japanese Americans when they and their families were unconstitutionally incarcerated in U.S. government-run domestic concentration camps during World War II are expected to attend the Japanese American National Museums Annual Gala Dinner and Silent Auction on February 5, 2005, at the Century Plaza Hotel & Spa.
Teacher Florrie (Wakenight) Lyle and student Esther Noguchi will be at the dinner. Miss Wakenight taught elementary school in Jerome, Arkansas, and Noguchi credits her lifetime of work in education to developing a love of learning while in camp. More admirable than their dedication to the students was their willingness to come to such a hostile place in the deltas, away from the comfort of their homes, family and friends to teach children with the face of the enemy, Noguchi wrote. Mrs. Lyle and Noguchi reunited at the Camp Connections conference in Little Rock in September. Mrs. Lyle told her former student that her late husband had promised that he would take her to dip her toe in the Pacific Ocean one day. That never happened, but Noguchi, who lives in Hilo, Hawai
i, has invited her 91-year-old former instructor to her home to fulfill her dream.
Florriedeen Wakenight Lyle: Teacher to the Imprisoned
Florriedeen Wakenight Lyle had been teaching for six years as a public school teacher in Searcy, Ark., when she saw the job posting: Teachers were needed at the Japanese-American Relocation Center located in Jerome, Ark., about three hours from her hometown. She jumped at the opportunity.
My students were from Hawaii, and they were the most patriotic children I had ever met, she recalls. They knew all about the Army, Navy and Marines, and they knew all the typical patriotic songs and wanted to sing them.
After three years, Mrs. Lyle, with her late husband, Thomas, moved to Phoenix, Ariz., for a public relations job at the Gila River War Relocation Center, another internment camp for Japanese-Americans.
After the war, the couple settled in Benton, Ark., and had a daughter, Linnie. Today, Linnie lives with Mrs. Lyle in Benton and theyre both members of the Provincia De La Sal Chapter.
This July, Mrs. Lyle thought her daughter was taking her to lunch, but when they arrived at the restaurant, the entire chapter was there for her surprise 95th birthday party. I was so surprised I didnt know what to do, she says. The DAR has been so wonderful to me.
Every Veterans Day the chapter hosts a memorial service at the Benton courthouse, and each year at 11 a.m., Mrs. Lyle rings an old school bellthe same bell she rang at the same time on November 11, 1918, when word reached Arkansas that WWI had ended.
