Note*: Our story into the DeLungs is long.... James 'Jimmy' Curtis DeLung only knew his father's name, (on his birthcertificate). His mother never told him anything of his father, andfathers family. She just would not talk in that direction. She movedfrom W. Va. when the two DeLung children were small to Radford, Va. Shealso had 2 children by a first husband, then later marred her thirdhusband in Radford. Jimmy was in so much honor of her, that he wouldnot even talk or go in search of finding out anything. Marlene, Jimmy'swife sent out letters to the West Virginia area around Oakhill andHuntington in search of James Marvin DeLung, nicknamed 'Dink'. She got ananswer from Russel DeLung, that James Marvin was known as their 'UncleDink'. She was overjoyed, and went on to know and meet Vern and his mom and dad, VernonKeith and Janie. Russell and Sue also, who live near Vernon Keith andVern, Jr. They all went to the cemetery where James Marvin DeLung isburied beside his brother, Hogge Bernard DeLung and their parents.Marlene's husband was so glad to finally find out about his dad andfamily, that he never got to know. James 'Dink' Marvin DeLung was married first to a Winifred, (3 children,then Jimmy's mom, Georgie Jones Carper, 2 children, and then he marriedIda Lafferty and had six children by Ida. The children of Ida and Idaherself, do not respond to any information or letters received. Marleneoccasionally hear from one son, James Barry who lives in Maryland.Marlene and Jimmy hope that James Barry can get in to meet his brother,and he says he will. 'Speaking of John DeLung, the father of Delores Davis, he and I worked along time at the Veterans Hospital here in Beckley, John DeLung workedthere from the time the hospital opened up to the time he died there as apatient on Aug. 14, 1974. He was one of the 'outside' crew whomaintained the grounds of that 25-acre set-up. John's specialty was thatcaring for the flowers on the grounds. 'Never have I known anyone who could care for and raise roses like JohnDeLung. In those days the surroundings of the Veterans Hospital was theagreed upon beauty spot of Beckley. After John DeLung called it a day,the flowers never again amounted to much. 'When John DeLung went to work at the V. A. Hospital here in town, FrankT. (Pop) McQueen was assistant manager as his office was then called.John and Pop McQueen were good friends. When Pop McQueen came to Beckleyhe had among his possessions the saddle of Jesse James, the noted outlaw. When Robert Ford, 30, killed Jesse James in his home at St. Joseph, MO.,on April 3, 1882. Jesse James (Sept. 5, 1847-April 3, 1882) was flatbroke and living incognito. Mrs. James had to sell all Jesse's things toget something to live on. Pop McQueen's father, then living at St. Joseph, Mo, brought Jesse'ssaddle, a typical Western saddle. In time that saddle was past on to PopMcQueen who had a son locally known here in Beckley as 'Toughie'McQueen. As all that Toughie cared about was playing football on theFlying Eagles Football team, Toughie could not have cared less about thatsaddle. Result was that Pop McQueen gave John DeLung Jesse James's saddle. Johntook it home with him and put it out in the hen house or some otherout-building at his home in Dothan. There John said his children playedwith it awhile and passed it up. In May 1967, John DeLung was flattenedwith a sick spell and asked me to take the saddle off his hands and keepit. It took close to half a gallon of neat's foot oil to bring the saddleback to condition. A 'neat' is a steer. By boiling the hooves of a neatyou get neat's foot oil, a wonderful leather conditioner. This saddle isin the museum here in Beckley. Hundreds have come to see it. I aminterested in it because Jesse James was the son of a Baptist preacher. One day some springs ago, John DeLung and Ben Bragg brought and set potfor me on the grounds about my home one of the finest holly trees a bodyever laid eyes on. Each spring it now bears berries almost by thebushel. John DeLung and Ben Bragg also set out the holly trees whichgrace the grounds about the lovely Veterans health emporium. Those trees were dug up in the area of Dothan, the sprawling settlementon the banks of Mossy Creek that was named after the celebrated Bibleplace called . . . . .
