She was 87 years old, and retired from thestage eight or ten years ago, coming to Baltimore to live, Mrs. Germonwas born in New Orleans in 1821. Her father was William Anderson, anactor of note, and her mother was Euphemia, a daughter of JosephJefferson. Her first appearance on stage was at the age of 7 years, whenshe had the child’s part in William Tell, with Edwin Forrest as the star. For sixty years afterward she acted in companies supporting leading starsup to the time of her retirement. Mrs. Germon married at the age of 17 toGreen Germon, an actor. Two of their children, John E. and Effie Germon, are on the stage. ARTICLE TAKEN FROM THE NEW YORK DRAMATIC MIRROR, AUGUST21,1909 'Mrs. Jane Germon, the veteran actress, who had been critically ill atthe home of her son Dr. Frank Germon, died last Tuesday, August,10, 1909from ailments attendant upon her old age. She was 87 and to the lastattained her keen mental facilities. She was the mother of Effie Germonand grandmother of Bessie Germon. Her sister Mrs. Elizabeth (Anderson)Sanders, living in San Francisco is over 90 years old and many years agowas also an actress of some fame and ability. Jane was born in New Orleans February 8,1822, daughter of WilliamAnderson, theatrical manager, and Euphemia Jefferson, a member of thefamily of Players to which the late Joseph Jefferson belonged. Jeffersonwas a cousin of Mrs. Germon, and in later years, often appeared in hissupport. Mrs. Germon’s first appearance on the stage took place in 1809, when sheplayed the child’s of Wm. Tell with Edwin Forrest. When 12 years oldshe went on a tour with Junius Booth, playing the little Duke of York inRichard III. When she was 17 she became the wife of G.C. Germon, anactor of note, who died while Mrs. Germon was still a young woman. Fromthe time of her marriage, began a long stage career. With her cousinJoseph Jefferson she was seen as the shrewish wife Gretchen in Rip VanWinkle. While she was still playing child’s roles, she was the littleboy, Rip’s child. One of her most effective roles was that of the nurse in Romeo andJuliet. She was for many seasons the first '?'old woman' as the post wasthen called with the Ford Stock Co. at the Holliday Street Theatre,Baltimore. Two of her most successful and best known characterizationsof that period were Mrs. Wellington De Boots in Everybody’s Friend andMrs. Dove in Married Life. She was an Admiral Queen in Hamlet, Emiliain Othello and Lady Ann in Richard III in which she played when still achild, and played one of the princes in support of the older Booth. Herlast appearance was at a benefit in 1892 at Ford’s Opera House, in Baltimore, when Mrs. John Drew came hereespecially to appear in one their old pieces, 'Married Life.' Mrs. Drewappeared as Mrs. Hetty Dove (Mrs. John Drew was the beginning of theBarrymore family) and Mrs. Germon as Mrs. Coddle and here was witnessedthe performances of the two most famous old women interpreters thecountry ever applauded. This remarkable old actress, who practically retired from the stage in1879, was, in the opinion of the best judges of drama, never excelled incertain lines of stage work, and her portrayals were always marked byfinish, intelligence and rare discrimination. In the elder days sheshared public applause with her contemporaries, Mrs John Drew and Mrs.Gilbert, that fine old actress who still clings to the stage. Mrs.Germon was one of the world’s most famous actresses and she wasidentified with the stage for more than three-quarters of a century.' Parents:
