Dewitt Clinton DyerPop-up Pedigree Note*: Provided by: Hal W. Jennings Dewitt Dyer shows up twice in the Oneida County, NY 1860 census. He iswith his family in Florence and also in Camden (page 943, age 16, clerk)It could be that Dewitt was counted twice and has the wrong age. Thisexplanation is consistent with the story in the History of Houston (MN)County (1882), which says he left home at the age of 16 and entered amercantile establishment, where he remained until 1862. In the 1870 census for Houston, Houston County, MN (page 1107), most ofthe assets of the family were listed with Dewitt as the head-of-houshold;$3,000 real estate and $10,000 personal property. His father, George, only had $400 real estate. This may be an indication there were familyproblems. Dewitt is listed as 25 years (or I mis-read it because heshould be 29), born in NY, a merchant of dry goods and groceries. A.Spencer is 24 years and a clerk in store. Harriet is 17 years and keepinghouse. Martha is 15 years and in school. Also in the house with Dewittwas Thomas Trilils(sp?) (21 yrs, clerk in store). The Houston County Historical Society has a wonderful pair of weddingpictures on display of this couple. They are mis-dated as 1861. They weretin-types taken in Chicago during their honeymoon in 1871. Dewitt is intux & tophat with a long goatee. Nancy Jane is striking in an elaborategown complete with ornate hat. The 1875 Minnesota census shows the young family in Houston Village(p240). D.C. Dyer is 33yrs, Nancy J. is 26yrs (should be 27), Mabel is2yrs and D.C. (jr) is 1yr. Also in their home is E(rastus) W. Dyer,26yrs, who is Dewitt's brother. No one else with the Dyer name is foundin Houston Village. The 1885 Minnesota census shows the growing family still in HoustonVillage (p260). D.C. is 43yrs, Nancy is 37yrs, Mabel 12yrs, Clinton11yrs, George 9yrs, Arthur 4yrs, and Blance (this must be Genevieve'smiddle name) 2yrs. A Norwiegan named Betsy Olson, 22yrs, is in the houseas a domestic. Elsie Dyer, of unknown relationship (maybe Dewitt's aunt),is also in Houston Village (p261). She is 60 years old and born in NY. Noother Dyers are in Houston Village. The 1895 Minnesota census shows the family still in Houston Village(p209). Dewit (sic) C. is 53yrs and has been in MN 25yrs and 6mos(therefore arrived about Jan 1870, about 5 years after his father), NancyJane is 47yrs, Mabel, 22yrs, is married to Alford (sic) Abrahamson andliving next door with her son, Merril 2yrs, Clinton 21yrs, George 18yrs(should be 19yrs), Arthur 14yrs, Genevieve 12yrs, and Dania (sic) 8yrs.Also in the house as domestics are two native Minnisotans, Dora Moen27yrs and Thea Johnson 21yrs. In the 1900 census for Houston, Dewitt is listed as; born in Oct 1841 inNY, both father & mother born in New York, owned a home with no mortgage,a merchant of dry goods and married 29 years. His wife, Nancy, was bornin Aug 1847 in Vermont, both parents born in Vermont, 6 of 7 childrenstill living, and the 'can't read' box is checked [because she is blind].The only children listed are: George (b. Sep 1876 in MN, school teacher),Arthur (b. Aug 1880 in MN, at school), and Dana (b. July 1886 in MN, atschool). A servant named Mary Arneson (b. Dec 1880 in Iowa, both parentsb. Norway) was living in the house. Dewitt Clinton jr. was in his ownhouse in Houston by this time. The article in the Houston County History (1982) by Daphne (Dyer)Baumgartner says: 'My grandfather, De Witt Clinton Dyer, was born October2, 1841, in Florence, New York. He was the son of George Hazard Dyer,[info about George]. [He] enlisted in an Illinois regiment at age 20 andwas discharged at Look Out Mountain, Tennessee, March 4, 1865.' They had a harrowingexperience getting across the bridge to safety, carrying their trunkbetween them. They settled in Houston and built their home in 1877. He died inNovember, 1934. There were six children from the union: Mabel, De WittClinton Jr., George, Arthur, Genevieve, and Dana.' History of Ryegate, Vermont says Dewitt served three years during theCivil War. Gravestone says, 'VET 1861-65.' Dewitt did not leave a will but his estate was probated in Houston County21 Aug 1925. He is refered to as D.C. Dyer and D. Clinton Dyer. Mentionedin the document are his wife, refered to as 'Nane J.' and six children;Mabel L. Abramson, D. Clinton, George E., Arthur G., Genevieve D. Stine, and Dana L. Nancy received the house on lots 6, 7, and 8 of block 26 inMons Anderson's Addition to Village of Houston (NW corner of Spruce &Jackson Streets) and $1,470.18 cash. Each child received $490.06 in cash. An interesting footnote: There is a Dewitt C. Dyer shown in the 1880census in San Marcos, Hays County, Texas (page 030). He is age 31, bornin Texas, parents both born in Tenn., single, whose occupation is 'gnl(?)mdse merchant'. Why is Dewitt C. Dyer such a popular name?
