Jennings The 1840 census only lists head of houshold and number of people in ageranges. We find George H. Dyer in Annsville, Oneida County, NY (page211). There is one male and one female 20 to 30 years old and a male 70to 80 and a female 50-60. Is this young George and his new wife Elizacaring for his (or her) elderly parents? Or is George H. the older man'sname and they still have 2 children (or George and his wife) living withthem? Other Dyers in Oneida County are: Alexander in Augusta (page 332, age 40-50, wife 30-40, daughter 5-10); Edmund in Augusta (page 331, age 40-50, wife 20-30, sons; 1:5-10,1:10-15, daughters; 2:<5, 1:5-10); Lyman in Augusta (page 331, age 20-30, wife 20-30); Horace H. in Marcy (page 039); Milton in Marcy (page 038); Richolafs in Vernon (page 410, age 50-60, wife 50-60, daughters; 1:5-10,1:15-20, 1 free colored <10); Sylvanus in Marshall (page 354, age 70-80, wife 60-70). By the 1850 census, the George H. Dyer family has a strong beginning inFlorence, Oneida County, NY (page 202). George is 36 (though he wasactually 34), born in NY, a farmer who owns $2,300 property. His wife,Eliza, is 38 (though she was atually 37) and was also born in NY. Theirchildren and ages (as listed in this census - note that relative agesseem to shift around from census to census though it is subject tomisreading as all of this is taken from microfilms of handwrittenmaterial): Dewitt (9), George H. (7), Spencer (5), Erastus W. (3), MaryAnn (1) all born in NY. Mary Cornell(sp?), 16 born in NY is also in thehoushold; probably a 'domestic'. Two houses away is Hannah Dyer, age 60born in Connecticut with $200 property and Elsey Dyer, age 25 born in NY.Is Hannah George's mother? An aunt? What relation might Elsey be? The Houston County (MN) History (1982) says that George's wife's name wasAnn Eliza Dana and that she died in April, 1858. So it comes as nosurprise that George had remarried by the 1860 census. What is surprisingis that his new wife was 18 years younger than his first wife. In the 1860 census, George H. Dyer is still in Florence, Oneida County,NY (page 817). George is 44, born in NY, a farmer who owns $1,100 realand $600 personal property. His new wife, Rebecca, is 30 and was born inNY. Here's where the ages start to deviate from earlier records. Dewitt(18), A___so (this must be A. Spencer's first name) (15), Erastus W.(13), Nancy (10), Harriet (9), Martha (5) all born in NY. Note thatGeorge and Mary Ann are missing and Nancy, Harriet, and Martha are newarrivals. We find young George in the Town of Camden, Oneida County (page873) age 18, listed as a laborer apparently working for Harry(sp?)Scovill(sp?) in whose house he is living. Camden is only a short distancefrom Florence. Mary Ann may have died or her name was changed to Nancy(name changes seem to be a 'thing' with this family). Since she waslisted as being 1 year old in 1850, it might be expected she would be 11in 1860, but she may have been less than 1 in 1850 (I don't see any age 0or fractional ages in this part of the census). Also living in the house isSarah Kinnsley(sp?)(Kingsley?), age 17, a domestic born in NY. Other Dyers in Oneida County in 1860 census (incomplete list - don't haveindex): Dewitt in Camden (page 943, age 16, clerk) Dewitt! This must be arelative or it could be that Dewitt was counted twice and has the wrongage. This last explanation is consistent with the story in the History ofHouston (MN) County (1882), which says he left home at the age of 16 andentered a mercantile establishment, where he remained until 1862. There is also a Clinton Dyer in Precinct 7, West Troy, Rensselaer County,NY (page 657). Since the unusual name Clinton seems popular in thisfamily, he must be a relative as well. The 1870 census shows two households of Dyers next door to each other inHouston, Houston County, Minnesota (page 1107). George H. Dyer is listedas 54 years, born in NY, a merchant of dry goods and groceries with realproperty worth $400. He has a new wife, Nancy A., who is 9 years youngerthan his second wife (31 yrs, keeping house, born in NY) and a son,Edward (1 yr, born in MN). Also in the house with George were 3 WILBERchildren: Albert (12 yrs), Sarah (10 yrs), and Christina (8 yrs). Thesemust be Nancy's children from her first marriage. The 1880 Census of Walan listed in his household Geo. H. (64) Nancy A.(42) Edward (11) LaFayette (8) May (6). The 1885 Census listed Geo. H. (69) Anna (48) Edwin (16) Laffail (13) May(11). In the house next door are some of his other children; Dewitt C. (C lookslike L.) (25 yrs- should be 29), A. Spencer (24), Harriet (17), andMartha (15). (See Dewitt C. Dyer for more information about this.) The1870 census seems to have wrong ages for several children. Missing areGeorge H. jr., Erastus W., Mary Ann (again), and Nancy. I need to recheckcensus for George. There is an Erastus W. Dyer in Madison, Lake County,SD in the 1870/75 and 1880 (page 188) census that I bet is this son ofGeorge. He is also listed in the 1890 Roll of Honor for Civil Warveterans. (Haven't checked any of these sources yet.) There is a MaryDyer listed in Caledonia (page 1038) who is 19 and was born in NY. She isin the house of Thomas Abbotta and is at school. Nancy (or Mary Ann)would be about 20 years and could be married. George appears to have moved from NY to MN between 1860 and 1865. Myguess is about 1864 because George and Nancy were married in MN in April,1865 but, because Nancy was born in NY, I guess they met in NY. This isall conjecture at this point. George and Nancy appear to have moved to Whalan about 1875 as theirdaughter, Eliza May, was born in Houston in 1874 but they are not livingin Houston for the 1875 state census. The article in the Houston County History (1982) by Daphne (Dyer)Baumgartner says: '[My great grandfather was] born January 10, 1816, inWaterlo [should be Westerlo], Albany County, New York. George Hazard Dyermarried Ann Eliza Dana, who was born April 11, 1813. She died in New YorkState in April 1858. My greatgrandfather eventually settled in Whalanwhere he died May 13, 1896. My daughter, my cousin, Darrel Leland Dyer, and I found his grave there in the summer of 1978.' =========================================================== History of Fillmore County, MN. On pages 388 and 389 appeared thisbiography which I later found at the Fillmore Co. Historical Center thissummer. (e-mail from Ken Olson) 'Georger H. Dyer, one of the representative men of Fillmore County, andthe leading merchant of Whalan, was born in Westerlo, Albany Co., NY onthe 10th January 1816. His father, George H. Dyer, (was this Hazard orsomeone else?) was born in Rhode Island, and moved to New York in 1794.He married Mrs. Nickerson, whose maiden name was Hannah Jones, niece ofCommore Jones. (John Paul Jones was really John Paul who added Jones toescape the law) The family moved to Oneida County (Florence) in 1833,where George, the subject of our sketch, was married to Miss Ann ElizaDana in 1840. (I have complete Dana data if you would like it) He wasengaged in farming for a few years; then began his mercantil career inEmpyville (near Florence, NY), continued in the same one year, andreturned to his farm near his old home. His wife died in 1858 leavingeight children. In 1860, he married Miss Rebecca Murdock, who diedeighteen months later. In 1861, he removed to Palatine, Cook County,Illinois (just outside Chicago), and three years later to Minnesota, locating on a farm in Houston County.(Haven't located it yet but think itmight be near Money Creek a few miles outside of Houston.) Mr. Dyer wasunited in matrimony with Mrs. Nancy Wilber (Was it Wilbur or Wilber orWilbor? Where did she come from? There were Wilbors near his farm inSouth Westerlo, Albany, NY) in 1865. In 1867, he opened a general storein the village of Houston, and fours years later transferred the same tohis son, Dwight C., (I think it should be DeWitt Clinton Dyer not Dwight,I have Nancy Baumgartner's Dyer Genealogy if you would like it)) who nowcarried on the business. Mr. and Mrs. Dyer came to Whalan in 1871 (Smalltown on scenic Root River which seems to have been populated withScandinavians). He erected his present store (Whalan had a huge firewhich destroyed the store and many other buildings. His house stillstands and I have a picture of it and talked with present owner.) thesame year, keeping a general line of groceries, dry goods, hardware, etc.He was a member of the first village Council, and is now the President;has also held other local offices. His grandfather, Charles Dyer,(usuallyspelled either Dyar or Dyre) was a native of Rhode Island, anddistinguished himself as major in the Battle of Bunker Hill, inconsequence of which he was promoted to the rank of Colonel, and engagedin a number of important battles. The father of the latter was born inBelfast, Ireland, and among the early settlers of Rhode Island. He wasCaptain in the British Navy in the war against the French in which he wasseverely wounded in the face and discharged in consequence. Mr. Dyer hasa sister, Miss Elsie Dyer, living in Houston (I found buried in MoneyCreek Cemetery where a number of Dyer and Vances are buried). His onlybrother died when young, Albany County, NY. ( I think he might have been buried in Oneida Co., NY because I did find a Dyer buried in Old TabergCemetery, Annsville, NY south of Florence, NY and Empyville as well as inGrilley Cemetery, Florence.)

Note*: From Armstrong, Emmet Co. Iowa (Newspaper) (from Ken Olson, gr. nephew) A LONG TIME RESIDENT GONE: George H. Dyer passed away on Satuday morning,Funeral on Sunday. 'George Hazzard Dyer died at his home in the village of Armstrong, lastSaturday morning, Dec. 5, 1914, after an illness of some months withstomach trouble and attendant complication. The funeral was held onSunday from the Presbyterian church. We are indebted to his relatives forthe following history and other information. George Hazzard Dyer was born in New York state Aug 11, 1843. His motherdied when he was about 14 years of age, and consequently he spent hisboyhood away from home. His father moved to Illinois later. He was thesecond oldest of eight sons and daughters, they being Dewitt Dyer ofHouston, Minn.; Spencer Dyer of Pipestone, Minn.; Mary Winters Dyer; whodied a few years ago at Madison, S. D.; Hattie Case of California; MarthaVance of Homestead, Mont.; Erastus W. Dyer of California; and a sisterwho died in infancy. He spent some years in army service, after which he came to MartinCounty, Minn., where he occupied a homestead until the grasshopperscorge. He then moved to Armstong, about nineteen years ago., where hehas lived most of the time since. He was married to Mary A. Elwiss ofBlue Earth, Minn., in 1871. Four chldren were born to them: George Dyerof Mason, WIs.; Mrs Ruth E. Dyer Owens of East Chain, Minn.; Daisy A.Dyer Robin of Minneapolis, Minn., and Arthur C. Dyer of St. Louis, MO. The deceased united witht Wesleyan Methodist Church about 25 years ago, receiving advancement in experience later, and during his last illness hereceived great help spiritually, at times praising the Lord and quotingscripture, with the love of God being shed abroad in his heart. He wouldsay, 'Oh, how I love my wife and children.' When asked if he did notwant to stay then, he would say, 'No, I love my Saviour more,' and at onetime said, 'I see my Saviour--I see Him'. He fell asleep in Jesus, Dec. 5 and the funeral was held on Sundayafternoon, the service being conducted by Rev. Sutton of Armstong, Rev.Mrs. Pollock of Esterville, and was laid to rest in the Armstrongcemetery, awaiting the resurrection day, when 'we shall read love'sshining letters in the rainbow of the spray; we shall know each otherbetter when the mists have cleared away.'

Note*: 'Known throughout the state of Illinois as an active, hardy pioneer, whodid much to build up the great Northwest. A distinguished abolitionist, apersonal friend of Abraham Lincoln and Owen Lovejoy, he was one of thefirst to take up arms in defence of his country in the War of theRebellion.' (History of the Kimball Family) =============================================== GEORGE RANDOLPH DYER. The subject of this sketch was born June 3, 1813,at Clarendon, Vermont. As a youth he showed a quick mind and made rapidprogress with his studies, which were completed at the Rutland Academy.Born, one of the many sons of Daniel Dyer, an eminent, amiable andaccomplished gentleman, and who was justly celebrated for hiseccentricities. He came from a family of soldiers, his father havingfought in the Revolutionary War, at the battle of Bennington, under Gen.Stark, while two brothers distinguished themselves in the war of 1812.After the close of the Revolution, his father was commissioned Major ofMassachusetts Page 85 State Militia, by Governor John Hancock, and the commission is now inpossession of his son, George R., he being the youngest son of ninechildren. His early years were spent upon the old homestead in Vermont, where, under the inspiring influence of the rugged scenery, he acquired apractical knowledge that did much for him in after years. Mrs. SusannahOlin, daughter of Hon. Judge Gideon Olin, was his mother. Judge Olin andDr. Stephen Olin, the talented jurist and the worthy divine, belonged, and were in direct line related to the subject of this sketch, as wasalso the famous Judge Harrington, who insisted that the only basis forholding slaves under the Vermont law was a bill of sale from theAlmighty. At the age of twenty-one, single-handed and alone, he drove ahorse to the West and at once entered upon a successful business career.Arriving in the West, in 1835, he explored the shores of Lake Michigan ina birch bark canoe, and at that early day was so favorably impressed withthe future of the then great West, the country surrounding Milwaukee andChicago, that he determined to make it his home. Imbued with theseconvictions, he invested largely in Milwaukee and Chicago, but preferringa pastoral life, he sold out and settled permanently on a farm nearPlainfield, Will county, Illinois, in 1841, after marrying Miss ElizabethHowe Kimball, of Elgin, Illinois. Miss Kimball was the daughter of thefirst settler of Elgin, and that beautiful city occupies the site oftheir old homestead. She was a lady of fine natural endowments, loving, tender, patient, gentle, an exquisite creation of the finest sentiment. Ahelpmeet in every way to a man whose capital was energy and industry. Aportrait of her will be seen in the Olin history. Six children were theresult of this union, four of whom still live: Belle R., now Mrs. Lee,Daniel Burns, Lizzie L., now Mrs. John F. Lyons, and Ida May, now Mrs. A.A. Whiting. Geo. D. died in 1863, and Susie Olin, Mrs. Schermerhorn, diedin 1872. At that date, physically, Mr. Dyer was six feet, two inchestall and well proportioned. His figure was erect, bearing distinguished, Page 86 and a striking figure. His strong characteristics, distinguishedself-reliance, intellectual head, prominent forehead, pleasant eyes withan expression on his countenance beaming with kindness, courtesy andbenevolence, a bright mind and big generous heart marked him at an earlyage as a leader of men. The East was good enough, and he was glad tohave been born there, but in the West he thought the achievements of theEast could not only be duplicated but surpassed. He took active partbefore settling at Plainfield in organizing the territory of Wisconsin. He was a leading citizen, and in 1856 his friends and neighbors made himsheriff of Will county, Illinois, a position he filled most acceptably. He was one of the first and most active members of the Republican party, and although nearly alone, true to his freeborn instincts, he educatedhis neighbors to agree perfectly with Lincoln and Lovejoy, his personalfriends, whom he adored, that slavery must be held in check at allhazards and at all costs, and must eventually be abolished. He kept astation of the underground railroad while fleeing blacks were hurried tosafety. Thoroughly imbued with the spirit of freedom, he has proven nounworthy son of an illustrious father. Indifferent to the opinions ofothers when he satisfied himself that he was right, a lover of nature, and devoted to the works of Robert Burns, his voice was always raised tocombat error and uphold the right. He believed that no wrong like humanslavery could permanently withstand the pressure brought to bear againstit, when that sentiment seemed to derive its source from all humannature, supported by the teachings of God, and no one rejoices more atthe downfall of the sad problem of human iniquity, misery anddegredation. The outbreak of the Rebellion lured him from the pursuitsof peace. He was thoroughly fitted for the responsible appointmenttendered him by President Lincoln. He served his country faithfully andwell through the entire period of the war. His two sons followed him tothe war, and showed the same dash and impetuosity, the sameimpatience--distinguished marks in the character of their father. Page 87 The eldest, Geo. D., was Captain of Company C, 29th Missouri Volunteersat the age of seventeen, and died in the service from disease contractedin the swamps around Vicksburg. The younger, Daniel B., was captured inthe battle of Pilot Knob, Missouri, and was held a prisoner for two weeksby General Sterling Price's army in 1864, before making his escape. After the war, he returned to his beautiful and extensive stock farm inIllinois, where he remained for a few years, when he removed to Jolietand engaged in the hardware business. His belief in the West made himalternately rich and poor. He sold out in 1870, and has since been livingwith his children. Lincoln, Lovejoy and Long John Wentworth were hisintimate friends, and it is said that he has about as many stories totell as were told by Lincoln. His brother, the late Dr. Charles VolneyDyer, of Chicago, had a wide reputation in the same line. The associatesof his boyhood have been dropping out of mortal ken to the silent landduring the past half century, until now there are few left. Now lookinginto his genial face and furrowed brow and mild expression of his eye, itis not difficult to understand the enthusiastic devotion of the men whohave had the pleasure of meeting him and hearing his counsel, orlistening to his inexhaustible stores of anecdotes. In spite of eightyyears since he first saw the light of day in the old Green Mountainhomestead, he retains the mental powers of his middle age. He is probablyacquainted with more people than any man who is not in active publiclife. If he meets a man and speaks with him, he never forgets him or thecircumstances under which they met. He remembers the people he has met indifferent places and can recall incidents that happened to the minutestparticular. In the closing years of his life, and when he finally passesto his long sleep from the scenes and struggles of this life, his namewill long be remembered. In the bustling and pushing young city of KansasCity, he is spending the closing years of his eventful life. He is stillfull of the spirit of adventure that leads men to push on to the newfields and conquer them. (Olin Genealogy, 1893)
