Heman Dyer , Rev. Pop-up Pedigree Note*: The 20th Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans, Vol. 3,p.364 Dyer, Heman, clergyman, was born in Shaftsbury, Vt., Sept. 24, 1810; sonof Henry and Sarah (Coy) Dyer; grandson of Edward and Elizabeth (Fish) Dyer, and a descendant of William an d Mary Dyre. William Dyre was one of the eighteen original owners of the state of Rhode Island, and his wife was hanged on Boston Common, June 1, 1660, for her Quaker faith. He was graduated from Kenyon college, Ohio, in 1838, and was later ordained a Protestant Episcopal clergyman. In 1840 he became principal of a school in Pittsburg, Pa., resigning in 1843 to accept a chair in the Western university of Pennsylvania, of which institution he became president in 1844. In 1849 he removed to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was employed bythe American Sunday school union and soon afterward became secretary andgeneral manager of the Evangelical knowledge society in New York. In 1854 he was made editor of the Episcopal Quarterly Review, and in 1860 declined the bishopric of Kansas. He became a member of the board of missions in 1868, and in 1880 retired from active work. He was married in 1850, to Cornelia Catherine, daughter of Arad Joy. Trinity gave him the degree of D.D. in 1843. He is the author of: Voice of the Lord upon the Waters (1870);Record of an Active Life (1886). Is a narrative of the author's wonderful escape from death in a railroadaccident near Hoosick Falls, N. Y., Oct. 4, 1869. Rev. Heman Dyer was born in Shaftsbury, Vt., Sept. 10, 1810. At the ageof six years he removed with his father's family to Manchester. At theage of 17 he was sent to the Academy in Arlington, where he fitted forcollege. In 1829 he went to Keuyon College, Ohio, an iustitution thenrecently founded and presided over by the Rt. Rev. Philander Chase, D. D.In this institution he remained as student or teacher for a little morethan ten years. He was ordained as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in1834, by the Rt. Rev. C. P. McIlvaine, D. D., D. C. L., then Bishop ofthe Diocese of Ohio, and a year after he was ordained by the same Bishopas Presbyter. In 1840 he moved to Pittsburg, Pa., where he had charge of a classicalschool, until he was elected a Professor in the Western University ofPennsylvania. A year later he was elected the Principal or President ofthe same. While there he received the degree of D.D. from TrinityCollege, Hartford, Ct. In 1849 he removed to Philadelphia where for atime he was connected with The American Sunday School Union. In 1852 hevisited Europe. In 1854 he removed to New York and became the GeneralSecretary and editor of the Protestant Episcopal Society for thePromotion of Evangelical Knowledge. He also acted as CorrespondingSecretary of the Am. Ch. Mis. Society, as one of the managers of theAmerican Bible Society, a member of the foreign committee of theEpiscopal Church, a trustee of the Philadelphia Divinity School, of theGeneral Theological Seminary, and a member of the New York HistoricalSociety. In 1868 he made a second visit to Europe. He also visited Mexicoin 1875. He published while in Pittsburg 'Sermon Commemorative of Prof. Daniel S.Stone' 'An Address to his Bible Class,' and while in New York, 'The Voiceof the Lord upon the Waters.' besides numerous Reports upon the work ofthe Evangelical Knowledge Society and the American Church MissionarySociety. He kept the Alms House at Boston from 1732 to 1740. Hiswife Hannah did so after his death. Lived in Kingstown, Newport, RI, Lebanon CT, Boston, Mass. After 1stwife died (1723-1726) he removed from Connecticut to Boston. According to NEHGR Vol 145, p263: 'By 22 Aug 1697 Henry and his firstwife Mary were of Newport, and they were at Hebron, Conn. by July 1715 andLebanon., by June 28 1718. On 18 Dec 1726 Henry was dismissed from theColumbia Church in Lebanon to the New South church in Boston, and on 24April 1732 he sold all of his land in Lebanon to his brother Barrett Dyreof Boston. AnthonyDyer, placed by the leading critical authorities among the ablestexponents of landscape art, is known and appreciated not only foreminence among American artists but for a type of citizenship of constantservice for the public good. Colonel Dyer is a member of the family of proud place inRhode Island and New England history, and the chapter written in his dayand generation, adding achievement in a new field, is well added to thefamily record. Colonel H. Anthony Dyer, son of Governor Elisha and Nancy Anthony (Viall)Dyer, was born in Providence, R. I., October 28, 1872. He obtained hisgeneral education in St. Paul's School and Brown University, leaving theformer institution in 1890, and graduating from the latter in 1894, withthe degree of Bachelor of Science. He followed art study in France, Italy,and Holland, and has made landscape painting his field of endeavor. From1897 to 1900 he was executive secretary to his father, then governor ofRhode Island, and was aide-de-camp on his staff, with the rank ofcolonel, during the same period, throughout the Spanish War. Numerous pictures by Mr. Dyer are on permanent exhibition in the CorcoranGallery, of Washington, D. C., the Rhode Island School of Design, and theProvidence Art Club, while many of his paintings are in privatecollections. He is universally regarded as a representative Americanpainter in water color of landscape subjects, a talented artist whosework has attracted wide attention and strongly favorable comment. He isa member and ex-president of the Providence Water Color Club, member andfrom 1904 to 1914 president of the Providence Art Club, and a formermember of the Boston Water Color Society, and the Boston Art Club. He iswell known as a lecturer on art and travel topics, and fills manyengagements of this nature throughout the East. In 1919 he was honoredwith the degree of A. M. from Brown University, and he was also made anhonorary member of Phi Beta Kappa. An inherited love for political activity and party affairs has given himkeen interest in the political situation in his native State. He hasnever entered public life as an office holder, but from 1916 to 1919 waspresident of the Republican Club of Rhode Island, a loyal supporter ofhis party, and highly regarded in party councils. Colonel Dyer waschairman of the speakers' bureau for the Food Administration of RhodeIsland early in the United States' participation in the war, and wasafterwards made, by the Council of Defense, chairman of the speakers'bureau for the State of Rhode Island, the two later being merged. He was appointed by GovernorBeeckman a director of the Community Councils of Defense for Rhode Islandand became a member of the Council for Rhode Island of the 'four-minutemen', working in cooperation with the Bureau of Public Information. Hewas also director of speakers of the United War Work Activities campaign,and during the war he gave without limit of his services and ability inthe publicity campaigns for the various agencies of victory, thegovernment, social service, and welfare organzations. His previousexperience as a lecturer stood him in good stead and he was particularlyeffective in addressing large audiences. Throughout all of his war work he enjoyed the confidence of the people ofhis State to a marked degree, and his leadership met with a readyresponse in every relation of the war. His work, since the victory ofthe allied cause, continues in his chairmanship for Rhode Island of theFatherless Children of France, a philanthropic organization whose namebespeaks its purpose. Colonel Dyer is a junior warden of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, and isan active worker in his denomination, a member of the standing committeeof the Episcopal church of Rhode Island, and in 1919 a deputy from RhodeIsland to the general convention of the Episcopal church at Detroit. Bythat body he was appointed to the Army and Navy Commission. He is amember of the Society of Colonial Wars, the Hope Club, and the RotaryClub. His fraternity, to which he was elected during his college years,is the Sigma Chapter of Psi Upsilon.
