BROWN,1998, p. 161) Data from note in 'Dyer Search' Vol 6, #1, p30 [WFT Vol. 5, #1242] WAD notes that James Dyer(3) was the son of Charles Dyre(2) by his firstwife, Mary, who was in all probability, Mary Lippitt, daughter of John &Rebecca Lippitt. His marriage is recorded as occuring in 1696 not only inMiddletown and Newport records, but also in the Little Compton records -so, it is possible he may have either lived in the later place, or hiswife may have at the time of their marriage. He may have resided inPortsmouth and in Middletown. Letters of administration were granted on his estate Jan 29, 1735/6, toWilliam Shreve, his son in law. The sureties were William Shreve andHenry Van Horn. (History & Genealogy of the Shreve Family, p.28] Parents:

James Dyer , Jr. Pop-up Pedigree Note*: His first wife's name is NANCY, but ca. 1831 he married Susan E. SMITH.One of the sources (Pike's Diary, p. 15) comments that the children ofThomas WATSON were 'Ebenezer, Cynthia married Ansel Hill, then marriedJas. Dyer?'. Does this relate to the present James Jr.? His tombstoneat Calais reads that he died at the age of 78. The 1800 and 1810 Calais censuses give the impression that James went tolive with some other relatives after the death (?) of his mother in the1800-1810 period. A check of Dyer relatives in Calais does not show anyevidence of him or his brother, Samuel, so it may be presumed that theystayed with distaff relations until they reached their majority. In the 1820 census James (b. 1793-1804) is shown living alone near hisbrother, Samuel [P28; b. 1790]. He was engaged in agriculture and was,as yet, unmarried. The 1830 census of Calais shows James (b. 1790-1800), his wife (b.1800-10), and children: two boys born 1825-30 [Jones & Ebenezer], onegirl born 1825-30 [Lydia]. They lived near his brother Samuel, and hiscousin Nathan [P11; b. ca. 1790]. The Calais census of 1840 shows James (b. 1790-1800), a woman who may behis wife (b. 1810-20), and children: one boy born 1835-40 [Samuel], twoboys born 1825-30 [Jones & Ebenezer], one boy born 1810-20 (who he is isunknown, but he is certainly not a son and may have been a farmhand aged20-30], one girl born 1835-40 [Mary], one girl born 1830-35 [the firstFrances], and one girl born 1825-30 [Lydia]. One person is indicated asbeing involved in 'navigation of the ocean' and this is most certainlyLouis (unless his age of 12/13 was too tender in those days to go tosea), unless it was the 20-30 year old who was living with them -- if hewas a sailor that may explain what influenced Louis to become a sailor by1850. 1850 Census Calais, Washington Co., Me., Roll 273, Page 174a & 175 (allb. 'at school' aged 14. 10 May 1876 Obituary: 'In this city on the 8th inst, Mr. James Dyer, aged77 years. James Dyer , Sr. Pop-up Pedigree Note*: Beginnings, page 9: 'In 1783-4 James and Jones Dyer came from Machias andsettled in Calais. Their original home appears to have been Providence,Rhode Island. James drowned in early manhood but left 4 children: JamesJr., Samuel, daughters Mrs. Chase and Mrs. Westbrook Knight.' P10 -- JAMES DYER: b. ca. 1760/65; m., ca. 1785, MARTHA (P27; b.post-1755; maiden name lost); d. 1800. The birth of Jones' brother (as he is referred to in the sources)James provides further difficulties, as were noted above. In any case,James joined his brother, Jones Dyer (P1), in the foundation of the townof Calais, ME. According to the sources, James drowned during his earlymanhood (Annals of Calais, p. 21), and left four children. His deathtook place after the first national census of 1790, when he and hisfamily were enumerated at Calais (Plantation No. 5 east of Machias). The family contained one male over sixteen (James), one male undersixteen (his just-born son, Samuel), and two females (presumably his wifeand one daughter). One other daughter was born after the 1790 census, but when is unknown. His second son, James Jr., was born in 1797 or1798, thus placing a 'no earlier date' of about 1798 for James death --in his mid- to late-thirties, hardly what is normally considered 'earlymanhood' (his will was first put into probate on 21 AUG 1800). The census of Calais in 1800 tells a bit more of the story. Itlists a Widow DYER born between 1755 and 1774 who was living with hertwo boys born between 1790 and 1800 (Samuel and James Jr.), two girlsborn between 1790 and 1800, and one girl born between 1784 and 1790(Martha). The number of girls here contradicts The Annals of Calaiswhich stated that James left four children, but there is some likelihoodthat more than two children would have been born to a couple in aneight-year period. This third daughter born 1790-1800 more than likelydied before the 1810 census and, if she died just after the 1800 census, might have been considered an infant death by the source. The 1810 census of Calais shows the 'Widow Dyer' born between 1755 and 1774; children: two boys born 1790-1800 (James Jr. and Samuel),two girls born 1790-1800 (the two unnamed daughters), and one girl born1784-90 (Martha). By 1810 their eldest daughter (and one of her youngersisters) were living with her cousin, Jones DYER Jr. and his family --which makes it likely that the widow, Martha DYER, had died by thisyear. Who James Jr. and Samuel went to live with after the supposeddeath of their mother is unknown. None of the DYER families at Calaishave any unaccounted for children in the 1810 census and none unaccountedfor in the correct birth bracket of 1790-1800. SOURCES: Annals of Calais (1875), p. 21.
