He received his education chiefly in Dr.Fiske's Academy at South Scituate, Rhode Island, where he was a studentfor several years. He was reared to agricultural pursuits, and was theowner of the one hundred and twenty acres, known as the Dyer farm,Cranston, which he cultivated and improved. His long life of over eighty years was passed in the towns of Cranstonand Johnston, residing alternately in the two towns, in the latter forabout five years. For a number of years he represented Johnston in thestate senate. [Cutter] Hon. Rodney F. Dyer, resides in Olneyville, R. I., is an enterprising,executive farmer, and has been several times elected State Senator fromthe town of Johnston. Of his children, John and Rodney F. are large porkpackers in Olneyville; Byron W. was a soldier in the war of the Rebellionand died from wounds received in battle at Petersburg, Va.; Elisha is apractical farmer and has charge of that department. DeathCertificate shows he was an 'Inmate - Minnesota School for Feeble Mindedand Colony for Epileptics, Faribault' died of Typhoid fever after 5 dayswith 'general debility from Epilepsy'. He had been an inmate here for 15years, 1 month and 14 days. Formerly of Cedar, MN. Not mentioned in hismother, Roxie M. Dyer's will made on Aug 13th, 1919 but he was dead bythen, if all data is correct. Buried in Bethel Cemetery, He is buried atBethel alongside Malinda, Stephen S., and Roxie M. Roland James Dyer Pop-up Pedigree Note*: Data from Helen Romano's notes: 'Roland Dyer was born and raised on thefamily farm. As a young man he worked in the logging camps and enlistedin the Spanish American war with the 14th Minn. Volunteers. He wasdischarged at the end of the war and worked for the Telephone Company.After his marriage he homesteaded land in Northwestern South Dakota, andbuilt a sod shack. Two years of drought ended his farming and he workedfor a time in Lemon, SD, then returned to Minn. and worked for theTri-State Telephone Company. In 1912 his safety belt broke and he fellfrom the top of a telephone pole and was badly injured. The accidenthappened at Inver Grove and he was transported in a horse drawn ambulanceto Ancker Hospital in St. Paul. He fell seventeen days before thecompensation law was passed. Eleven years later the Telephone Companygave him $700 for his injuries but did not give him lifetime work asverbally promised. He worked as a school custodian until he retired in1934 and moved to Deer River and lived in a log cabin.' [JWP] Parents:
