Girl 'K' (b. 1794-1800) is notlisted and she either died or was married by 1820. One of the abovepersons was marked as foreign born and not naturalized, two were engagedin agriculture and two persons in commerce. The 1830 census shows that all but the three youngest of the childrenwere no longer living at home. This census shows Stephen (b. 1770-80),his wife (b. 1780-90), and children: one boy born 1815-20 [B], and twoboys born 1810-15 [A & C]. Finally, by the 1840 census of Calais, thefamily was no longer listed. As Stephen would have been about 65 in 1840,it seems more likely that he and his wife died during the previous decadethan that they moved away. SOURCES: Calais census of 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830. Stephen Dyer , Jr. Pop-up Pedigree Note*: Washington County, Maine Deeds. 17:202. Washington Co, Maine CourtHouse, Date of entry: 4 Aug 1999. In a deed in which Nathan Dyer sells toJones Dyer Junior a tract of land bounded 'southeasterly by land formerlyowned by Stephen Dyer Junior of which he died possessed meaning to conveythe northwesterly half of original lot, numbered twenty four and marked'Jones Dyer' upon the plan' ...... dated 29 November 1826 Washington County, Maine Probate Records. Washington County, Maine Booksof registered Deeds. 5:496. Washington Co, Maine Court House, Date ofentry: 5 Aug 1999. Martha Dyer & Thomas Paine appointed administrators ofestate of Stephen Dyer Junior late of Calais, deceased, yeoman on 4 May1824. 28 June 1819 - Stephen Dyer sells property to Stephen Dyer,Jr., 50 acresalong the Schoodic River adjoining land owned by Jones Dyer, for $1100[Wash. Co. Deeds Vol 9, p195] Probate of his estate, although he died intestate with only $900worth of land and $110 of personal property, resulted in 23 courtappearances over 3 years. Of $1300 in debtors claims, only $288 was paidto them after selling off everything and paying expenses. [Washington Co.Maine Probate 5:498, 499]. People he owed money to included Jones DyerJunr ($66.40) & Nathan Dyer ($287.22). [Wash. Co. Probate, 5:499] It appears that Martha Dyer, appointed administrator, was his wife, because on 24 Sept 1824 she petitions court for her dower and courtorders survey to establish her one third share on 16 Nov 1824 [WashingtonCo. Probate 5:501] HOWEVER, she could also be Martha (Bailey) the widowedwife of his Uncle James. His last sickness was attended by Doctor Richardson who was paid$52.07 on 6 Sept. 1825 and his funeral expenses were $8.00. [Wash. Co.Probate, 5:503] On 15 Jan 1825, in a Report of Dowery the surveyors report settingoff a lot called the Stephen Dyer lot (must be Stephen Jr's lot as hisfather Stephen is still alive) adjoining lots owned by Jones Dyer seniorand one owned by Jones Dyer Junior to be used to pay Martha'sdowery.[Wash. Co. Probate, 5:502] During the 23 court appearances, Martha Dyer is named along withThomas Paine as administrator up until 27 Jan 1827 [Wash. Co. Probate,6:56] when she no longer appears. There is no mention of her everreceiving payment for her dower third. She probably died before thistime. [JP] Parents:
