William Dyer

Religion*: William was united with the Boston Church, and became a freeman on 3 March 1636. He was disowned by the Church in 1638 as a follower of Hutchinson and Wheelwright (Quakers), and driven to Rhode Island. Here he was held in high esteem and made Secretary of the Colony.

NEHGR, Vol 151, pages 408-416 'Walter Blackborne, London Milliner' byJohan Winsser; says (in part): About Midsummer's Day (June 24) 1624Blackborne contracted fouteen year old William Dyer as an apprentice.Dyer, the son of an affluent Lincolnshire yeoman, was the future husbandof Mary (Barrett) Dyer, the Quaker martyr. How the Dyer family came toselect Blackborne is not certain, but it may have been through theHutchinsons of Alford, Lincolnshire, or through the Carres of Sleaford,Lincolnshire, both families with known long standing associations withthe Dyers and with close relatives in London. It may also be that theDyers of Lincolnshire knew of Blackborne through one or more of the manyDyer families living in London, to whom they may have been related. Inany case, William Dyer must have labored on a trial basis for the firstyear, because it was not until 20 August 1625 that his nine yearindenture was enrolled with the Fishmongers, and it was made retroactiveto the previous summer. In assuming responsibility for an apprentice,Blackborne obligated himself to serve as a surrogate father, teachingyoung Dyer his trade, providing him with bed, food, clothing, andbehavioral supervision, and maintaining him in the religious life of theparish. Captain Dyre wasdisfranchised for 'seditious writing' Nov. 15, 1637, removed to RhodeIsland, and was one of the signers of the compact of government for thatprovince, March 7, 1638. He was secretary the same year, generalrecorder, 1648; attorney-general, 1650-53; member of the general court,1661-62, 1664-66; general solicitor, 1665-66, and 1668, and secretary tothe council, 1669. He was commissioned commander-in-chief upon the sea in1653, and headed an expedition fitted out in Rhode Island against theDutch. His wife, Mary Dyre, was the only woman to suffer capitalpunishment in all the oppression of the Friends the world over. Sheaccompanied her husband on his mission to England with Roger Williams andDr. John Clarke to obtain the revocation of Governor Coddington's powerin Rhode Island and while there became a convert to Quakerism and apreacher in the society. The date of their marriage was known to be between mid-summer 1633, whenWilliam Dyre's nine-year apprenticeship in London ended, and December1635, when his son Samuel was baptized in Boston in New England. It was through the professional services of Mr. Richard Holworthy ofLondon that the record of William Dyre's apprenticeship was found.Through his efforts, also, the baptismal record of William Dyre wasdiscovered. Therefore, when Mr. Holworthy wrote: 'There seems to me to beno doubt as to the wife of William Dyre and I want to congratulate you onhaving this information,' there need be no hesitation in offering themarriage record for publication. Mary Dyre's maiden name of BARRETT explains why her son Samuel named ason of his, BARRETT Dyer. The Registers of St. Martin-in-the- Fields record the baptism, October24, 1634 of 'William Diar, son of William and Marie,' These records showthat William and Mary Dyre emigrated to America not earlier than verylate in 1634. [e-mail from Aurie Morrison] The 20th Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans, Vol. 3,p.366 Dyre, William, mayor of New York, was a son of Captain William andMary Dyre, who came from England to Boston, Mass., and joined the Firstchurch there in December, 1635. Captain Dyre was disfranchised for'seditious writing' Nov. 15, 1637, removed to Rhode Island, and was one of thesigners of the compact of government for that province, March 7, 1638. Hewas secretary the same year, general recorder, 1648; attorney-general,1650-53; member of the general court, 1661-62, 1664-66; generalsolicitor, 1665-66, and 1668, and secretary to the council, 1669. He was commissionedcommander-in-chief upon the sea in 1653, and headed an expedition fittedout in Rhode Island against the Dutch. His wife, Mary Dyre, was the onlywoman to suffer capital punishment in all the oppression of the Friendsthe world over. She was executed June 1, 1660. Mayor William Dyre was appointed to the military service under the crownand proposed the conquest of New York from the Dutch in 1673. He was a member of the governor's council, andin 1680 was elected mayor of the city. He was arrested on charge of high treason by the merchants of New York in 1680 and indicted in 1681. He wasplaced upon trial, denied the authority of the court, and was sent toLondon for trial, which was delayed by Samuel Winder, his prosecutor, andhe was given his liberty by the council, Sept. 30, 1682. He was advancedby King Charles II., Jan. 4, 1682, to the position of surveyor-general of hismajesty's customs in America and held the office till his death. He wasalso made king's collector of customs for Pennsylvania and New Jersey andremoved to Penn's province, settling on a large tract of land in Sussexcounty (now in Delaware). In 1687 he was elected a provincial councillor ofpennsylvania for three years, but was not allowed to take his seat. DYER Son M Male W 42 VA At HomeRI RI The 20th Century Biographical Dictonary of Notable Americans, Vol.3,p.365 Dyer, William Henry, silk culturist, was bom on the farm of his=onPocasset Neck, R.I., Aug. 12, 1817-_son of Deacon Daniel P. andAbby(Williams) Dyer, and a descendant in the sixth generation fromWilliam andMary Dyer through har es, who settled on Ashuntick Neck,R.I., knownafterward as Pocasset Neck. Deacon Daniel P. Dyer was adescendant on thefemale side by marriage from Roger Williams, andAbby Williams was adirect descendant from the same worthy=William H. attended the districtschool, a private school inProvidence and [p.366] Kingston academy. Hewas educated as a farmerand nurseryman, his father being proprietor ofthe Dyer nursery. In1836 he became interested in the propagation ofmulberry trees tofurnish food for silkworms and in the production andpreparation ofsilk for the manufacturers. He conducted this business oneyear inProvidence, R.I., and three years in Fredericksburg, Va. In 1840hewas captain of the state militia, and in the Dorr rebellion took=withthe law and order party. In 1861 he joined the Federal army andwas maderecruiting officer, his age exempting him from active fieldservice. Heserved in this capacity for two years. In 1875, on thedeath of hisfather, he became sole proprietor of the nursery and=on Pocasset Neck. Hewas married May 1, 1836, to Mary Groton,daughter of Christopher and Sarah(Williams) Tanner. She was a=descendant in the sixth generation fromRoger Williams and was bom=married in the house built by Roger Williamsfor his son. Of theirsons, William S. was an officer in the civil war andsubsequentlyIndian agent in Dakota. Daniel Pierce was a soldier in theFederalarmy during the civil war and succeeded to the management ofthenursery business and Edmund Tanner became joint proprietor withhisbrother, Daniel of Mulberry Grove, on the death of theirfather.Captain Dyer died at Pocasset, R.I., Feb. 3, 1899. He was in the recuiting service in the Civil War in 1861 for theFederalArmy.
