Clayton Wallace Goodwin
Pop-up Pedigree

Note: Person Source
Note*: Clayton was born in Stephens Minnesota where his dad was stationagent. Stephens at that time was the end of the line. A stage coachlinked Stephens to Greenbush Mn. He took his schooling at Kulm ND where he went to live with his uncleLote Viets. Clay first went to work for ATandT in Fargo ND.At and T went out on astrike and Clay hearing of a eight hour day plus better benefits wentto Canada. AT and T were impressesed with his excellent telegraphicskills would have liked to keep him.(Ross's comment) Clayton came to Canada in 1918 where he went to work for the CanadianNational Railroad in Atikokan. It was there that he met his futurewife, Pearl Code. They were married in 1921 and they moved to Huronionabout 40 miles from Thunder Bay as a telegrapher. He was a active member of the Kiwanis Club and was a perannualchairman of the Easter Seals campaign, personally sending out hundredsof letters in that endeavor. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. According to his diary notes, he took responsibility for a missedtrain order almost causing a train wreck. Ross knew of the incidentand reported that Clay was covering up for George Code( his brother inlaw) who was just starting out as a telegrapher. In any event thedispatcher also missed it. No apparent punishment was issued. They moved, together with their 3 children, to Ethelbert Manitoba in1927. Warren was born in Ethelbert. Ross tells of Clay and Pearl who were scheduled to catch a train outof Warroad during the 1920's. They started from Badger in lots of timebut unfortumely the car, a Ford Model T, had 3 flats on the way. Theyjust made it. In leaving Clay told Ross to drive the car into a ditch,It returned to Badger without a hitch. The family lived in Ethelbert for 15 years when the lure of greaterearnings during the war years moved them to Gypsumville Manitoba. Thelure was large scale whitefish that was shipped from Lake Winnipeg tomarkets in the big cities. After three years they moved to AtikokanOntario where dad worked as Supervisory agent until his retirement inthe early sixties. His number in the CNR seniority list was 1917 SDORT #518. Ross related a story about Clayton and the Greek Orthodox priest. Thepriest came to pick up a large bottle of wine from the station. Theygot into a discussion about religion.Eventually to coll down the talkthey started to sip at the bottle. Ross reported that he later sawthem, still discussing religion walking arm in arm down the road. Clay was a Justice of the Peace for many years in Ethelbert. He was amember of the Kiwanis club in Atikokan where he was head of the EasterSeals campaign. He skied and fished and read books for recreation. Hedidn't like politics. He had two cars in his lifetime, a Chevrolet (1928) which he had allkinds of problems with so he traded it for a 1929 Plymouth. He keptthat car for at least 10 years. We made many trips to Dauphin Man. andvisited with Ed and Jenny McClean (Pearl's sister) Clay was a cigarette smoker and that developed into emphasymia. Thiswas diagnosed in the late 60's complications of which lead to hisdeath in 1981.

Note*: George required glasses when he was a little boy. He had about sevenyears of piano lessons, going to Dauphin manitoba on a weekly basis toget instructions Ross relates that when George was young he found a pail of lard in thepantry in Ethelbert. The living room had been freshly painted and thruthe alughter from Morris they proceeded to plaster the walls, much tothe dismay of their mother when she found out what they were doing. I guess these two got into earlier trouble at Mabella. Since Mabellawas in the sticks a large larder had to be maintained. The two boysgot into the pantry one time and proceeded to tear off all the labelson the cans. Suppers were always a surprise for a long time. George left at a young man to work in telegraphy, living in the Yukonduring the war II. After the war he and his bride, Kay lived inWinnipeg. He moved to Toronto with his family where he continued towork in telegraphy for the CNR. He also worked in radio servicing. Hemoved to Cobourg Ontario where Kay still lives.(1999). After heretired he worked on a contract basis in Zimbabwe setting up acommunications network. He had just returned for a second contractextension when he contacted Heptitus C ( from drinking polluted water)and died.
