William Hayward Pop-up Pedigree Note*: William and Fanny Haward came to Rockland in 1836. They brought withthem two young daughters, one 3 years and the other about 18 months old.William was born at Lincoln, Sunbury Co., N.B., Oct. 8, 1810. He was theyoungest of a family of nine born to George and Mary (Smith) Hayward.His paternal grandparents, George and Ann (Durley) Hayward, werepre-Loyalist settlers in the Township of Maugerville in 1763. Hismaternal grandparents, Daniel and Ruth (Fitch) Smith, were natives of NewMiford, Lichfield Co., Connecticut, who came in 1783 from New York to NewBrunswick with the Loyalists and settled in the Parish of Burton, SunburyCounty. William's first wife was Frances 'Fanny' Nevers. She was born at LincolnAug. 31, 1812, and they were married there Mar. 1832. Her parents wereNathaniel and Hannah Nevers. Two years after his father's death, in Dec. 1828, William bought the 300acre farm in Lincoln. The deed was dated Dec. 1830. Five and a halfyears later, by deed dated May 19, 1836, he and Fanny sold the Lincolnfarm to John Glasier and Stephen Glasier Jr., and removed to Rockland,Carleton County. They purchased from John Stockford, July 15, 1836, the westerly half ofLot 5, half of the 300 acres originally granted to Abraham Stockford.Their farm fronted on the southerly side of the Becaguimec and ran up thehill, across the Rockland Road, and along the easterly side of the roadto Ashland. The first house was on the northerly side of the Rockland Road. Thefamily later built a new house on the southerly side of the road, justeast of the road to Ashland. The first house was destroyed by fire,whether before or after William's death is not certain. The second housestood until it too was consumed by fire in 1922, Fanny Hayward died at Rockland Nov. 12, 1847, aged 35 years, leavingWilliam with six children, aged 1 to 14 years. About a year later, Sep.23, 1848, he married Miss Elizabeth A. daughter of Thomas and Alice (orOlive) (Bradley) Sewell. She was born at Maugerville, Sep. 10, 1806, anddied at Coldstream, Carleton Co., Aug. 18, 1901, aged 95 years. William Hayward was a farmer. He was probably the one who planted therare and exotic plants, fruit tress and medical herbs, on the farm atRockland where he died Feb. 1, 1886, aged 75 years, 50 of which werespent in Rockland. He and both wives lie buried on the hill opposite thevillage of Coldstream. William and Fanny had seven children. They were: Clarissa M., Frances H., Isabella H., Amos Henry, George Nevers, WilliamAllen, and George Nevers William and Elizabeth (Sewell) Hayward had a daughter, Almeda Jane, b.Jun 13, 1851, d. Daniel Williams Hazard Pop-up Pedigree Note*: DANIEL WILLIAMS HAZARD, 7 (Joseph Hoxsie, 6; Jonathan J., 5; Jonathan, 4;Thomas, 3; Robert, 2; Thomas, 1), was born February 29, 1812, in Rome,New York; he died June 27, 1888. He always lived on the same farm, a partof which he inherited from his father. The following notice shows theestimation in which he was held by his townsmen: 'No man in this vicinitywas better known or more respected than he, as was attested by the verylarge attendance at his funeral. Mr. Hazard was strictly honest in allhis transactions, and too generous to be hemmed in by creed or party. Hewas a successful farmer for years, and acquired a competence by hisbusiness. A man of cultured intellect and generous heart, Mr. Hazard willbe long remembered for his kindness to all. He was a devoted husband anda most indulgent father.' He married, November 13, 1837, Ann E. Dyre, daughter of Christopher C.Dyre, and granddaughter of Mary Hazard and Colonel Charles Dyre. Parents:

In 1733 hewas Speaker of the House of Representatives, and in 1734 was electedDeputy Governor of the Colony, and was re-elected four years insuccession, dying in office in 1738. In 1733 he bought of his father, forone thousand pounds, the farm then (and still) called 'The FodderingPlace.' About this time he built the old house, taken down about twentyyears ago by Joseph Peace Hazard. By his will, George gave this house,with all outbuildings and an 'Island called Ram Island,' to his sonGeorge Hazard, who was Mayor of Newport. Parents:

May 6, 1713, he wasappointed by the Assembly one of a committee to make the public roadleading through the Colony from 'Pawtucket River to Pawcatuck River morestraight and fair and passable.'1 In 1719 he was appointedLieutenant-Colonel of Militia for the main land,2 and was ever afterwardcalled Colonel George Hazard. Jonathan Hazard Pop-up Pedigree Note*: He owned the Gov. Brown farm, 300 acres and the J.J. Watson farm, 209acres at Boston Neck, Rhode Island. He had several children. His will was recorded October 9. In 1739, his father gave to him by deedtwo hundred acres in Boston Neck. This land he ordered, in his will, tobe sold to pay his debts. Thomas, his son, called 'Virginia Tom,' sold itto Stephen Champlin. In 1785 it was divided among Champlin's heirs, andwas afterwards owned by Walter Watson, who gave it to his daughterAbigail. Walter Watson's wife was a granddaughter of Jonathan Hazard, anda daughter of 'Virginia Tom' Hazard, so that this was family property. Joseph Hoxie Hazard Pop-up Pedigree Note*: JOSEPH HOXSIE HAZARD, 6 (Jonathan, 5; Jonathan, 4; Thomas, 3; Robert, 2;Thomas, 1), was born June 16, 1777; he died October 12,1838. He moved,with his father, 'Beau Jonathan,' to Verona, New York, about 1806. Heaccumulated a large fortune there, and built a beautiful house near PennYan. His descendants speak of him as a man of noble appearance, and ofgreat physical strength. His character seems to have been as strong andsymmetrical as his person, unswervingly honest and courageous.
