Benjamin Franklin MahoneyPop-up Pedigree Burial*: Lot 78, Alva, Crook County, Wyoming, U.S.A. Note*: Benjamin Franklin Mahoney was the son of John Thomas and Harriet 'Hattie'(Hall) Mahoney. He was born April 13, 1892 at the family home onCentennial Divide between Whitewood and Spearfish, Lawrence County, SouthDakota. They resided there for several years, then moved to Alva,Wyoming where his father built a home for the family one mile south ofAlva on Lame Jones Creek. When Ben was quite young his mother died in Omaha, Nebraska followingsurgery. He and his father 'batched' for several years until his fatherremarried. His first year of school was attended at the Upper Beaver Creek Schooland the remainder of his grade school education was at the school inAlva. This same school house is still standing although it was movedfrom it's original location. It was used for many years as a shop. Ben attended Spearfish Normal School for two years, here he was active infootball and baseball. He would ride horseback through the hills fromhis home on Sunday afternoon, to Spearfish. Riding cross country posedfew problems for there were few fences to hinder him. On Friday night hewould return home the same way. He thoroughly enjoyed fly fishing andhunting and was an avid follower of baseball and football. When as a young man, he and his friend Vane Cooke took several head ofhorses to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada to sell. Soon after the sale ofthe horses, Vane returned to the States but Ben remained and worked on awheat and dairy farm. After working there for the summer, he tooreturned to his home in Alva. On June 8, 1913 he and Nina Ellen Morris were married at Belle Fourche,South Dakota, by Reverend Coffey, at his home. Witnesses were GeorgeWilliam Coffey, Inez (Coffey) Noonan and Thomas Coffey. They resided atthe John Morris home northeast of Alva until Ben, with the assistance ofa Mr. Graves, built a home in Alva. They moved into their new home andhad a housewarming with neighbors bringing refreshments. Their home wasa hospitable one, always a meal or bed for an extra one. Two of thevisitors at their home were Paul Magnet, a genuine old cowboy, andBuckskin Johnny Spaulding, who was a close friend of Ben's father, JohnMahoney. Ben and Nina had six children, three daughters and three sons, all ofwhom are still living (1981). Ben ranched at Alva for twenty-five years where he raised registeredHereford cattle. Later he operated a sawmill. In 1941 he and his familymoved to Hulett where he continued in the sawmill business until hisretirement in 1958. He died at Spearfish, South Dakota April 14, 1977. Elisha Mahoney , Sr.Pop-up Pedigree Note*: Elisha Mahoney, farmer, stock raiser, and proprietor of the brick kiln onsection 3, Magnolia Township, was born in Harrison County, Iowa, October16, 1860, upon the section where he now lives. He remained at home until1879, and then went to the Black Hills, remaining in and about Deadwoodfor one tear, during which time he worked in a saw mill. After hisreturn, he worked his father's farm on shares until 1889, when he boughtone hundred and thirty three acres of the old homestead, upon which heerected a two story brick house, thirty feet square. It was completed in1890, and the brick were manufactured by himself. In addition to generalfarming, he pays special attention to the breeding of Norman horses.Concerning his domestic life, it may be said that he was united inmarriage, in Harrison County, in 1877, to Miss Martha Scarborrough, andthe are the parents of eight children: William S., Amy R., Robert, Delia,Nellie, Jeremiah, Johnathon and Hiram B.
