Note*: This is from a letter written by Lillian (Nilson) Mittman on July 8, 1996 'Hans died August 31, 1944. His 2nd wife, Elaine came home around 10 pmfrom bowling and found him. It apparently happen very quickly and was a2nd serious one since his 1st one 8 years ago. He had a very good dayand even bowled in his own bowling league earlier in the day. We misshim a lot and he had been retired from our old home orchard for 8 or 9years so had some time to relax and do what he wanted for awhile. Heloved wood working and made many beautiful vases, bowls, jewelry boxesand apples. He even made wooden chains that were carved like Roy used tomake. We just visited with his wife the end of June as we came home froma good visit with Ellen and Bruce Gavin in Oroville. Ellen's health is not real good either. She's having some confusion anddisorientation that Dr's believe is just from growing older. She andBruce were here (Spokane, WA.) on the 3rd of July 1996 to see Dr.'s inSpokane and what way they might help. They wouldn't stay all night asBruce at 80 years old is still ranching and had 44 head of cattle hewanted to get home and tend to. Ellen reminds me of Grandma Nilson - so very small and always busy -except now Ellen tires easy too. We took our 5th wheel trailer and visited Ellen the last of June.Ellen's had a really hard working life all these years with raising 7children, ranching and having a dairy those many years too. I told hershe was to sit on her chair and tell me what she wanted done and wherethings were so I did all the cooking and dishes and canned 14 pints ofcherries Bruce had picked. She showed me a quilt she and Grandma Nilsonhad made together one time. Grandma was at our house

Nils Nilson
Pop-up Pedigree

Event-Misc*: Belle Fourche Cemetery, South Dakota., Type: Fact #1
Note*: NILSON FAMILY HISTORY Father, Nils Nilson, came to Wyoming from Billinge, Sweden, probably inthe year 1887. Mother, Emma Bjorklund, came the following year and theywere married at Eothan, Wyoming by John Pearson, Justice of the peace. Nils had homesteaded on the Bear Lodge, where they immediately made theirhome and lived until his death in 1920. To this family ten children wereborn: Nancie (who was a twin, the other child was still born and isburied in Emma’s rose garden under her bedroom window), Alvin, Anna,Nellie, Oscar, Jim, Roy, May, and Elsie. Probably the reason for coming to America, and the new world, was thespirit of adventure and a challenge to young people at that time, just asit was for the older children when they reached their maturity. Five ofthe nine went west to Washington state where they made their permanenthomes. It was a long trip from Malmo, Sweden, by boat to New York City and fromthere to Wyoming by rail. Imagine a young woman like mother coming thatfar alone. The first house they lived in was small and just a short distance west ofthe family log house. Eothan was our first post office which was run bythe Pearsons who also had a store where we bought supplies. After someyears that post office was discontinued and Aladdin became our postoffice and source of supplies. Most of his life father traveled by horse and wagon. The horses were Jimand Chub, the saddle horse was Sam. We had a one-seated top buggy, and athree-seated spring wagon. When we went in the three-seated wagon we usedumbrellas for protection from the sun. Mother used to drive the top buggy alone, some to visit. It was just the last few years of his life thatfather had an automobile. Father was a student, always studying and reading. He was civic minded, amember of the school board along with Mr. Herb Simms and a Mr. Ellsbury. The school district must have comprised quite a territory because Mr.Sims lived in Mona, Wyoming and Ellsburys were from Farrell, nearSundance, we were in between. Our home was named Highland Park, and thatis what it was, a home-like park on the highlands. Father was a surveyor, a civil engineer, and he was elected countysurveyor for some years before his death, six years, I think. The lastyear he made a complete map of Crook County, locating all places likedams, roads, etc. related to his surveying. We used to help him make theblue prints. Mother was a little lady from Sweden who made the home homey. She was anexcellent seamstress and kept us all covered. The ever versatile floursack found many uses. Once a year we ordered supplies from MontgomeryWard. These came by freight to Aladdin by train and were hauled home inthe wagon. It was really fun and exciting to unpack the boxes. The older kids walked to a school on Beaver Creek, which was a long walk. After a while there were enough of our own family to have a school in thefirst dwelling house at home. Later the men got together and built a logschool house that accommodated more children, and finally the fouryoungest walked down the hill to the Clayton place where school was heldin an old house. The Clayton place and our old home place are owned byour cousin Frances and her husband Dillon Ruland. The folks were Swedish Lutherans and as there was no church close wecould not have regular church attendance. We did go to a Sunday schooleast of Eothan at a Hat Creek schoolhouse. We also went to some churchactivities at the Alva church. Dillon Ruland’s mother would mail outlittle recitations for us to learn, especially at Christmas time. We were happy to hop up on theplatform to say our pieces. Mrs. Ruland always had a reward for each one,a little china toy or other token. We had a beautiful home built up in the few years father lived. Acomplete orchard with all kinds of apple trees, other fruit trees, andasparagus and rhubarb. It was really a miracle with no easy way to getwater. Mother even had a flower garden, and a rose garden beside herbedroom widow. There was a unique way of getting water. Eight hundred feet down thecanyon there was a wooden covered tank that held a depth of water thatran into this covered tank from a spring. In the yard at the top of thehill on a platform a pail was fastened to a grooved wheel. This waterpail ran on a wire, like a telephone wire which was fastened to theplatform. A rope on a big wheel fastened on the platform was turned tolet the pail down on the wire to the tank of spring water where itdipped, filled with water, and then the big wheel was turned winding therope up around it and the pail full of water was pulled up to the platform, dumped into a pail, carried to the house, and we hadwater. Sometimes the pail would jump off the wire, then someone wouldhave to walk down the canyon and put it back on its course. Of the nine children, Alvin and Jim were killed in accidents. Oscar andNellie died of heart trouble. Nancie lives in Seattle, Anna in Wenatchee, and Elsie in Port Orchard, all in Washington. Roy lives at Hulett,Wyoming, and May at Fairburn, South Dakota. This resume has been done by Roy and May, organized by a granddaughter,Evelyn Stearns, and typed by a great-granddaughter, Becky Peterson, ofNils and Emma Nilson. We could ramble on but I think our word limit hasbeen surpassed. The pictures help tell the story. This account above is found on pages 365, 366 and 367 and was copied fromthe book - ‘Pioneers Of Crook County 1876-1920’, by Crook CountyHistorical Society, Crook County, Wyoming, copyright 1981. and wasoriginally written in 1977. Obituary in the Rapid City Sun, Death of Wyoming Man in HospitalHere _____ Nils Nilson was born in Sweden July 1, 1863, and died at Rapid CityMethodist Deaconess Hospital October 26, 1920, aged fifty-seven years, four months and twenty-six days. Deceased came to America in the spring of 1887, and was united inmarriage to Emma Bjorklund December 14, 1888 at Eothan, Wyoming. Born totheir union were nine children, all living: Mrs. W. E. Scott, Mrs. F. D.Bothwell, and Alvin Nilson of Omak, Washington; Oscar Nilson, Seattle;Mrs. R. M. Egge, Rapid City; James and Roy who are at home, May and Elsie atSpearfish Normal. Their home is in the Bear Lodge, three miles west of Eothan and hasbeen rightly named 'Highland Park' His life work has been civil engineering or surveyor and road work, and his whole desire was to make these conditions better for hisfellowmen. His work was for others, not himself. He has been countysurveyor in Crook County for several years. He came to Rapid City sixweeks ago for medical aid and entered the hospital here two weeks later. Since that time he failedrapidly in health until his death. The body will be sent to Belle Fourche October 28, and funeralservices will be held there from the Congregational Church. He was amember of the Lutheran Church. Besides his wife and children he leaves tomourn his death two brothers and one sister.

Seth Noble
Pop-up Pedigree

Note*: Seth Noble, son of Thomas III and Sarah Root, was born 15 Apr 1743, andwas the well-known Rev. Seth Noble who came to Maugerville, N.B., 15 Jun1774, as pastor of the Congregational Church, the first settled ministeron the Saint John River following the expulsion of the Acadians. Sethmarried 1st, in 1775, Hannah Barker; 2nd, in 1793, Mrs. Reumah Emery; and3rd, in 1807, Mrs. Mary Riddle. He died at Franklinton (now Columbus),Ohio, 15 Sep 1807. James Hanney, the noted New Brunswick historian, in his account of theMaugerville Settlement, published in the New Brunswick Historical SocietyCollection, Vol. 1, 1894, tells us all would have been well with ParsonNoble and his Maugerville congregation had he been content to attendstrictly to their religious welfare. But Rev. Seth was from NewEngland, where the clergy had always been accustomed to exercising alarge share of authority in secular affairs, and he was also what somepeople in New England called a 'patriot,' and the majority of those inNova Scotia (now New Brunswick) a 'rebel.' Rev. Seth began to stir up his congregation to join with their friends inNew England in throwing off the authority of Great Britain. He wrote aletter to General Washington setting forth the great importance of thecapture of western Nova Scotia, and proposing to assist in such anenterprise if it should be undertaken. To make a long story short, in May 1777, Col. Gould was sent to the SaintJohn River by the authorities in Halifax, with a force to exact thesubmission of it inhabitants. They all took the oath of allegiance(although some broke it afterwards), and Col. Gould, on leaving the RiverSaint John, carried with him to Halifax, Isreal Perley, who had beenclerk of the rebel committee on the river. Parson Noble, with twoothers, Jonathan Eddy and Phinehas Nevers, escaped and reached Machias,Maine, by an inland route. There they joined Col. John Allen, who wasorganizing an expedition for the purpose of holding possession of theSaint John River on behalf of the Continental Congress. Parson Nobel never returned to New Brunswick, except with Col. Allen'sunsuccessful expeditions, which reached Saint John 02 Jun 1777, but hiswife remained at Maugerville for two years after his flight to Machias. And two of his sons, Joseph and Benjamin, apparently came to Sheffieldsome time after 1777, and later removed to Carleton County. This account is stated on page 2 and 3 in the book, 'Pioneer Families ofCarleton County New Brunswick', published for private distribution byGeorge H. Hayward, C.G., 29 Leeds Drive, Fredericton, N.B. E3B 4S7 Firstprinting, January 1994, Second printing, with revisions, February 1996. The following statement can be found on pages 124 and 125 in the book,'The St. John River and its Tributaries', by Esther Clark Wright: After the death of Captain Francis Peabody, in 1771, the leadership ofthe Maugerville community devolved upon Jacob Barker, Phineas Nevers, andIsrael Perly. Jacob Barker, for instance, was chosen as moderator of themeeting of the 'Subscribers to bond for the support of the Preachedgospel among us', on June 15, 1774, and his was the first name on thecommittee appointed to treat with Rev. Seth Noble, whom they purposed tocall to take charge of the church. Jacob Barker, second son of Jacob andMary Tamey Barker, and grandson of James and Mary Stickney of Rowley,Massachusetts, and great grandson of James Barker of Stragewell, Suffolk,England, who emigrated in 1637. Although Jacob Barker and his wife, MarySpofford, had only eight children, one of whom died young, and hisyounger brother Joseph, had only three, it is surprising how many St.John River families have acquired a barker strain. It is interesting tonote that, although the Re, Seth Noble married Joseph Barker's eldestdaughter and she shared his exile, her children returned to the St. JohnRiver to live.
