John PalmerPop-up Pedigree Note*: John "cut down trees, cleared the land, raised cattle and crops, built mills, logged, stream drove and lumbered, built at least one vessel, was farmer, lumberman, miller, fisherman, sailor, trader, shipmaster and soldier", but "had never made grindstones", one of the favourite occupations of Westmorland County in the early days where grindstones were a measure of value.
His reminiscences included ordering of the Dorchester militia to St. John in 1813 to replace the 104th, which had marched to Quebec. "We marched the first day to the Bend (the Bend of the Pedicodiac, Moncton later). There was no road - only a pathway marked by blazed trees through the woods. There were no settlements - only an occasional house, where now there are towns and villages. We had a hard march through deep snow, made more difficult by the scarcity of provisions along the route. The next month February, 30 volunteers were called for to do garrison duty at Fort Cumberland until the artillery arrived from Halifax. I was one of them. We came up to Shepody in a schooner, of which Thomas Brewster was master and owner. John Calhoun set us over to Belliveau and we trudged home, without food or drink and nearly perished from the cold." (Extracted from the St. John Journal, year unknown.) Biographical Note*: Marcus Palmer Sr. was a United Empire Loyalist. His father's first name is unknown, but his widowed mother Mary married William Lawrence when Marcus was three years old. When he was fifteen, Marcus, his mother and his step-father were refugees on the Commerce, a ship in the July 1783 fleet. In 1789 two important events in his life occurred. When court was in session at Gagetown 14 January 1789, it appointed Joseph Nickerson and 21 year old Marcus Palmer constables for the Parish of Hampstead for the year. Later in 1789, when he was 22 years old, Marcus Palmer married. Rev.Richard Clarke of Gagetown's Saint John Anglican Church recorded 'Waterborough Oct. 25 1789. Married Marcus Palmer and Anne Slocum, both of Hampstead, but were married at Mr. Wiggins in the above Parish'. Both Ann and Marcus were Quakers, but a Quaker wedding was not legal in New Brunswick at that time. Ann Slocum's older sister was married to a good Anglican, Jacob Wiggins U.E. So their home at Grand Lake in the Parish of Waterborough was used for the wedding.

(Loyalists of N.B., p. 317) Marcus took up a Land Grant on the West side of the St. John River in what soon became known as Hampstead in Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada. Later he got a Grant of an island in that river just off his original Land Grant. Othniel Merritt's original Palmer research showed Marcus as the son of Gilbert/Gideon Palmer, originally of Westchester, NY and settling in Westmorland County, New Brunswick. This is an error. Marcus Palmer was born about 1767. He died on the 23rd of April, 1822 at a age of 55 according to his tombstone in the Palmer cemetery of Hampstead, N.B. Gilbert Merritt didn't get married and start his family until after he immigrated to Canada. His will does list a son named Marcus, the obvious reason for Othniel's error, but he states that this is one of his two youngest sons. Further, Gilbert's son Marcus was born in 1813, and became a Dorchester, N.B. farmer. This Marcus Palmer was a Deacon to the Methodist Church and married Sarah Millidge Harris. Both of them are buried in Dorchester's Pioneer Cemetary. Together, they had seven daughters--no sons (The Palmer Brothers in the Chignecto, Helen M. Petchey). This leaves in question the origin and ancestery of Marcus Palmer the Loyalist who settled in Hampstead, N.B. He is clearly listed as a loyalist in the Loyalists of New Brunswick. His originating point in America is left blank. Other passenger and loyalist lists do not show where Marcus came from either. The Hon. Horace W. Palmer compiled masses of information on all the Palmers in the United states back in the 50's and early 60's. His unpublished manuscript lists Marcus Palmer of Hampstead on page 4776. Here he says that the parents of Marcus are unknown. Descendants of Marcus 'have stated that their ancestors were said to have come from Rhode Island in 1783 as United Empire Loyalists.' This information fits in that the wife of Marcus, Nancy Ann Slocum's father was a UE Loyalist from North Kingston, RI. This is information Horace Palmer didn't have when compiling his information. He thus concludes that 'we fully believe that they were from the Palmer family of Westchester, NY, and the descendants are somewhat confused in stating that they came from Rhode Island.' Given the rarity of the name Marcus among Palmers, I tend to believe that Marcus Palmer of Hampstead, N.B. is a descendant of the Palmers of Westchester, NY, but not through Gideon Palmer. Further research on Marcus Palmer in the Westchester, NY area may reveal his true ancestry. Family: Marriage*: 25 October 1789, Waterborough, Queens County, New Brunswick, Rev. Richard Clarke of Gagetown's Saint John Anglican Church recorded "Waterborough Oct. 25, 1789, married Marcus Palmer and Anne Slocum both of Hampstead, but were married at Mr. Wiggins in the above parish".
Both Ann and Marcus were Quakers, but a Quaker wedding was not legal in New Brunswick at that time. Ann Slocum's older sister was married to a good Anglican, Jacob Wiggins UE. So their home at Grand Lake in the Parish of Waterborough was used for the wedding., Principal=Nancy Ann Slocum
