This story was related by nephew Kenneth Hartlerode (Alta's son): Ken said Ella died with a stomach tumor the size of a small basketball.He and his family rushed over to see Ella, but got there too late, shehad already died and men from the funeral home were taking her down 3flights of stairs on a stretcher to the waiting ambulance. Chicago hadrows and rows of apartments and all had 3 stories with stairs andbalconies at the rear of the building - Ella lived on the 3rd floor ofone of these row houses.
