Madelaine was first employed as a Telephone Operator with the localtelephone company, Bell Canada. She worked out of the first floor of 76Adelaide Street West in downtown Toronto. She was employed by Bell from1928 to 1932. Madelaine has the distinction of being the FIRST TELEPHONE OPERATOR TOMAKE A LONG DISTANCE PHONE CALL OVERSEAS. She placed he outgoing phonecall and received the phone call which actually took about 8 hours tocomplete. Needless to say, there was quite a celebration afterwards.Madelaine also trained other Telephone Operators before she left BellCanada in 1932. Madelaine was then employed as a Telephone Operator at the T. EatonCompany (Department Store) in downtown Toronto. She was quickly promotedto a Supervisor position at Eaton's. Madelaine remained with Eaton'suntil her retirement after the age of 70 years. Eaton's wanted her tocontinue in their employ but she finally turned them down to finallyenjoy her retirement years. Madelaine Sheehan and Frederick 'Ted' Leslie were engaged in 1932,when she was 21 years old,and Ted was 18 years old. Madelaine and Ted hadknown each other from childhood. They remained engaged for over 60 yearsuntil his death in 1992. Though, Madelaine and Ted never married, therewas never a day that went by that they didn't see each other and spendtime together.
