John ShrevePop-up Pedigree Death*: UNKNOWN Note*: This line from: Betty Jane Kimble ' This research is from Dr. GregoryShreve who is a descendant of John Shreve and Mary Burke , the son ofFreelove Dyer and William Shreve of Loudon, Va. I am also a descendant ofJohn and Mary Burke Shreve. My line runs through their son (Minister)John jr and his wife Eliza Platt who left Loudon, Va and settled in SmokeHole Pendelton County, Va now WVa in the early 1800's. Dr Shreve's line is from the brother of Johnjr., William who settled WVa, Ohio areas. Dr Shreve host a web site athttp://Shreve.mcls.kent.edu/ShreveFamily/ShreveHome.htm Check it out for more info on the Freelove Dyer and William Shreve Line. John Shreve's name first appears in Fairfax County records in DanielShreve's 1749 will, where he appears to have received at least some landfrom his brother's estate. The Loudon County Deed Book shows an entrydated September 11, 1765 which mentions John Shrieve: 'Indenture made 10th September 1765 between John Cargill and Catharinehis wife of county Loudoun of one part and John Hague of same county ...Witnesseth for sum Two pounds Five shillings current money of Virginia paid by John Hague ... sold parcel of land lying incounty Loudoun containing 2 acres 1 Rood and 15 perches of land (the samebeing part of a greater tract taken up by JOHN Shrieve now in possessionof John Cargill) and bounded ... beginning at a dead white oak corner tosaid Hague's other land ... East side main road leading from Dawson'sFord to Leesburg ... to BENJAMIN Shrieves ...' This piece of land appears to be the land referred to in Daniel's willwhen he calls on Benjamin to 'relinkish his part of a survey that isbetween Benj. and myself to my br. John Shreve and Joseph Shreve. Marriage*: ( LoudonCo/Fairfax Va), Principal=Mary Burke Birth*: after 1719 Parents:

Joseph ShrevePop-up Pedigree Death*: UNKNOWN Note*: Daniel and his brothers are further linked to William Shreve Sr. by animportant land warrant: 'JOSEPH Shrieve, assignee of DANIEL Shrieve; 22 May 1745; 238 a. on brsof Secolin; adj WM. Shreve, SENR. Majr Cock, Owen (now Cock's) FrancisHague, John Hague. CC - WM Shreve, JUNR & Abraham Lassell. Pilot: JnoRattliff. Surv. William West.' This significant land warrant indicates that Joseph Shrieve and DanielShreve (brothers by the evidence of Daniel's will) are in Loudon Countyat the same time as William Shreve Senior. Further, the warrant indicatesthat they have taken up land adjacent to William Shreve (William Shrevehad a land warrant for 335 acres on Secolon Br.). William Shreve Junior(son of William Shreve listed above) is acting as chain carrier. There is no logical reason for Joseph and Daniel to take up awarrant next to William Shreve unless they were close relatives_such aselder sons. 3. Joseph Shreve Land Warrant Joseph Shreve is first mentioned in a 1745 land warrant (see entry forDaniel above) where he acts as 'assignee' for Daniel Shreve. He appearsagain in Daniel's 1749 will (see above). A land grant was issued inJoseph's name in Fairfax County. The land appears to be the same plotassigned by Daniel in 1745: 'JOSEPH Shrieve of Fairfax, Co. 238 A. in said Co. Surv. Mr. Wm. West.Adj WILLIAM Shrieve the elder, Col. Cocke, Owen now Cocke, Francis Hague,John Hague, WM. Shrieve Sen. 29 June 1757.' This warrant is interesting in that it places Joseph in the context ofWilliam Shreve the Elder (married Freelove Dyer) and his son WilliamShreve (now called Senior). A Loudon county document from March 1762again mentions Joseph's name in regard to this same plot of land: 'Indenture made 9th March 1762 between Joseph Scrieve of county Loudonand Jacob Read of same county for the sum of one hundred pounds...soldparcel of land lying in county Loudon...corner to William Shreve the Elder and in line of Col. Cocke...in a glade in theline of Francis Hague...corner to John Hague...containing 238 acres.Joseph Shreve at a court held 9th March 1762...Indenture and memorandum of livery of seisin, endorsed, acknowledged, ordered to berecorded.' Joseph Shreve's Harrison County will of 1811 provides even more supportfor the Missing Sons Hypothesis. The following is an abstract: I Give and Bequeath unto Joseph Shreve and Abraham Shreve four hundredand twenty acres of land lying in the County of Randolph Virginia on thewaters of the dry fork of Cheat...unto ____Cox (whose Christian name I do not recalled if I ever heard) who married theDaughter of my Brother JOHN Shreve senr. The Balance of three surveys inPendleton County...I give and Bequeath unto Benjamine Shreve sone ofBENJAMINE Shreve my brother all the obligations, notes Bonds &Claims...against James Dobbins...I give and bequeath unto BenjamineShreve (son of JAMES Shreve My Brother) all the sums he may standindebted to me by note Bond or otherwise... Joseph, Abraham and Benjamin mentioned in the will are the sons of JamesShreve (see James Shreve, son of William and Freelove). Benjamin, son ofBenjamin, appears to be the child of Benjamin Shreve and Anna Berry; heremained in Loudoun County. John Shreve, is apparently the same Johnmentioned in the documents cited above and is apparently the founder ofthe Pendleton County line of Shreves. Birth*: after 1719 Parents:

William (Sheriff) ShrevePop-up Pedigree Note*: About 1745 William Shreve and Freelove Dyer went to Fairfax County,Virginia to live. He died there about 1750. His widow, Freelove, appearsupon the court records of Fairfax and Loudon Counties, petitioning forher dower, and her sons, Benjamin and William are acting for her. (WFT16, #2071) Seventh child and fourth son of Daniel Shreve and Jane. William Shreveappears to be the founder of the Loudon County Shreves, and, hence of theWest Virginia Shreve lineage. Luther Allen indicates that 'about 1745William Shreve and Freelove Dyer went to Fairfax Co., Va. to live' (Allen1901, p. 28). At this time Loudon County was a part of Fairfax County. The following Fairfax land surveys confirm Allen's report: William Shrieve, no wart, date from surv, 26 Feb. 1744 - 2 Apr. 1745; 335a. on Secolon Br; adj Joh Phillips, Stacy Beaks, Landon Carter, Majr.Cock. CC - Jacob Lasswell & Thos Ellison. Surv. Amos Janney. 22 Nov. 1750 To be drawn in Benja Shrives name if he brings it under thehand of any two Evidences that it was his Fathers desire at the time ofhis Death. William Shrieve of Fairfax Co. 335 A. in said Co. Surv. Amos Janney. Adj.John Philips, Secolin's Br. Stacey Beaks, Col. Landon Carter, Maj. Cocke.17 June 1745. William Shrever of Fairfax Co. 665 A. in Fairfax Co. Surv. Mr. AmosJanney. Near Round Hill, adj. Herman Cox, Thomas Gregg, William Harris,John Hanby. 9 Sept 1746. Some of William's descendants remained in Loudon County until 1800, whileothers were involved in exploring Harrison, Pendleton and Randolphcounties in what is now West Virginia between 1750 and 1800. Luther Allen's History and Genealogy is the primary source of informationabout the offspring of William Shreve and Freelove Dyer. Allen recordsthe following children: William, Elizabeth, Mary, James, and Benjamin. There is evidence to suggest that at least three sons are missing fromthis accounting: Daniel, Joseph and John. [From: 'Gregory M. Shreve'] There is ample documentary evidence to support the missing sonshypothesis, adding Daniel, Joseph and John to the list of sons of Williamand Freelove Dyer. For Shreve Genealogists it is the addition of John Shreve that is soimportant. Together James and John founded most of the Shreve lines inWest Virginia. John Senior's son John Shreve (m. Eliza Platt) founded thePendleton Shreves, John Shreve's son William founded the Randolph CountyShreves, and James' sons founded the Upshur, Monongalia and Lewis CountyShreves.
