In 1971 he is semi-retired. In 1973 Jack, in company with an ex-Mountie who spoke Eskimo, made the first trip overland from Churchill, Manitoba to Arctic Bay on the northern tip of Baffin Island. They left Churchill on March 10 with an Eskimo dog team escort, and after a trip full of adventure and peril arrived at Arctic Bay on July 2, carrying mail to that region. An eastern mining syndicate had commissioned him to investigate reports of gold in that area.
