Signed sealed and Declared In ye Presence of Saml Sprague Thomas Dogget Mary Joyce her mark P W The mark of Peregrine White Peregrine was the first person born to the Colony; his mother Sussana gave birth to him aboard the Mayflower in Cape Cod Harbor. He was raised by his mother and step-father, Edward Winslow, a Governor of Plymouth Colony. According to the Mayflower Families, 'Peregrine moved to Marshfield sometime after 1632 with his mother and stepfather, and apparently resided there all his life except for a brief period around 1656 when the above deed from his father-in-law places him in Scituate. 'On 7 June 1636 Peregrine White, then about 16, was one of the 'voluntaries' to join with those on Massachusetts Bay and Connecticut to fight the Pequot Indians. On 23 Oct. 1643 when he was 'of Marshfield,' he sold to Mannasses Kepton of Plymouth land at Eel River given him the previous year by his brother Resolved. Peregrine and Resolved both received land from the Plymouth Colony Court in Feb. 1664 'Leiftenant Peregrine White' having lot four on 'Pochade Necke near Namassaskett.' 'Recognition of Peregrine as the first English child born in New England was given on 11 Oct. 1655 when 'in Respect that hee was the first of the English that was borne in these ptes;…The court have graunted unto him two hundred Acrees of Land Lying and being att the Path that goes from Bridgwater to the bay adjoyning to the Bay line.' 'When his eldest son was to be married, Peregrine not only deeded to 'son Daniel White of Marshfield in consideration of his intended marriage my dwelling, barn, outhouses and lands in Marshfield and a share of the enlargement recently granted, from the day of my decease,' but he also provided for his own wife and daughters Sarah and Mercy White 20 pounds each when they are 18 or marry.' The deed was dated 19 Aug. 1674 and acknowledged the same day. 'The next year Josiah Winslow made his will naming his (half) 'Brother Peregrine White' who was to have his Spanish rapier and buff belt with silver clasps. 'Peregrine White fought not only the Pequot Indians but also the advances of the church, until at the age of 78 he was admitted to the Marshfield Church: 'Capt. Peregrine White the first born Child of New England born November 1620 was admitted into this Church May 22 1698 In the 78th year of his age. Mat. 20.6.7.' 'The Marshfield vitals records note the death of 'Capt. Perigrine White' on 'July ye 20:1704' and the Boston News letter of Monday July 31, 1704 gives the following obituary: 'Marshfield, July 22 Capt. Peregrine White of this Town, Aged Eighty three years, and Eight Months; died the 20th Instant. He was vigorous and of a calmly Aspect to the last; Was the Son of Mr. William White and Susanna his Wife; born on board the Mayflower, Capt. Jones Commander, in Cape Cod Harbor, November, 1620. Was the First Englishman born in New-England. Altho' he was in the former part of his Life extravagant; yet was much Reform'd in his last years; and died hopefully.' The place of his burial and that of most other Mayflower passengers is unknown. Death*: 20 July 1704, Marshfield, Massachusetts Parents:
