                                                              Colonial Fancher Given Names

In Colonial America, the first two, or three, male and first two (possibly three) female given names were traditionally family names. A son was almost always named for his father, and usually a daughter was named for her mother. The given name of the father’s father should appear early in the naming pattern, and sometimes the mother’s father. (At that time the male’s line was given more importance than the female’s, so sometimes few or no given names from the mother’s line would be used.) Names of the father’s and mother’s siblings would appear later as additional children were born into the family, and it was common to see a son named for a man’s oldest brother.

Following is a detailed listing of the Colonial Fancher Families naming patterns, showing their children’s given names in the order of their birth and a possible source of the given name of that child. Joseph Fancher of Cape May County, New Jersey is not included because the names of his children, with the exception of his daughter Abigail, are unknown. But it should be noted that both John and Richard Fancher also named a daughter Abigail.
