Zenner Census InformationThere are many variants of the Zenner surname in newspapers, birth, death records, and marriage records. The Census is no different as most was handwritten in the early years. Ink blotches, differences in handwriting, and interpretation will always be a factor when researching original census records. The variants that I have come across are listed here: Zenner, Zenter, Zehner, Zenor, Seynor, Spanner, Center, Zentner. The issues with census information is best described in the following essay by Claude B. Slaton. The long and the short of it:

New York 1860 - 1880 Census The 1860 New York Census lists very few Zenner's. Since my Zenner immigrated in 1853, I thought that he may appear in the 1860 Census. I have not been able to find him in the 1860 Census, however he did appear in the 1880 Census. Franz Zenner along with his wife and several of his children are listed in the 1880 Census with his elderly mother-in-law. Franz's son John E. Zenner or Johann b. 1851 is shown in the 1880 Census as well. This is a transcription found on World Connect of the 1880 Census showing John E. Zenner. 1880 Buffalo Census

Wilhelm ZenterI was unable to find Wilhelm Zenter of St. Landry or Acadia Parish prior to 1880 in Louisiana Census records or in any census taken in the United States. A Wilhelm Zentner was found in 1882 and in 1905 land records in Canada. The earliest date indicated that Wilhelm, if it is the same man, was in Louisiana 1880 which is prior to Canadian record of 1882. Other records from Castle Garden and NARA searches on-line of Germans to America indicate that a Wilhelm Zenner immigrated from Germany June 29, 1857 on the ship Devonshire with other Zenner's of various ages.
