Descendants of Moses Holt

Generation One

1. Moses1 HOLT was born on 11 Feb 1742 in Wallingford, New Haven Co, Connecticut. He married Desire Hall, daughter of Caleb Hall and Esther Humphreville, on 15 May 1760 in Wallingford, New Haven Co, Connecticut. He married Sarah ? before 1779. He married Esther Solomon circa 1793. He died on 4 Apr 1799 in Sorel, Richelieu Co, Quebec, at age 57.1 He was buried on 5 Apr 1799.

Moses Holt is listed frequently on the muster rolls of the Pennsylvania Loyalists. On January 30th, 1779 he was in Francis Kearney's Company as Quarter Master while in Pensacola. Later that year as well as through 1783, he was listed as both Lieutenant and Quarter Master. By mid 1783, his son, William Johnson Holt was listed in the same Company as an Ensign, under Major Francis Kearney, commanded by Lt. Colonel William Allen.

Following the War, it appears he settled in Arlington, Vermont for several years. On February 16, 1785 [Vol 1, p. 229], Moses Holt "now resident of Arlington", paid Jonathan Fassett of Pittsford 90 pounds for the lot opposite Esquire Thomas Tolman's house, together with house and other buildings. Ozi Baker of Arlington sold Moses Holt, "now resident of Arlington" lots 52 and 53, of about 20 acres, together with a house, barn, stables and other buildings on 21 April 1785. In May, Thomas Tolman sold him a small amount of land, which was witnessed by both John Holt and Benjamin Holt. On 20 June 1785, Moses Holt, of Arlington, received 182 pounds from William Johnson Holt, also of Arlington, for several lots. One began at the N.W. corner of Thomas Johnson's home. John Holt was a witness.

He then settled in William Henry (now Sorel), in the district of Montreal, Quebec, where he acquired valuable real estate and was a magistrate. He received half-pay until his death in 1799. He was Justice.

Wait HURLBUT was born circa 1752 in Woodbury, Litchfield Co, Connecticut. He died on 21 Mar 1826 in Fairfield, Franklin Co, Vermont. Wait Hurlbut is listed in the Hurlbut Genealogy as b. 1752. The Pension Roll of 1835 - Volume 1, NE States gives his age as 66 in 1818, which agrees with the first reference. However, Wait's statement on 11 April 1818 at the Franklin County Courthouse says he was then 58 years old. On 11 July 1820 he appeared at the Supreme Court of Franklin County, giving both his age as 60, as well as his wife's. His wife"by reason of infirmity...unable to perform any labor have no other family under my care". So, it appears that all of his children were either married or deceased by 1820. His occupation was given as shoemaker.

In 1778 Wait Hurlbut enlisted for a year as a minuteman to be out three months at a time in Capt. Olmstead's Company, and was discharged in January 1779. That following July he enlisted at Arlington in the Comapnay commandered by Captain Moulton of the Regiment commandered by Col. Seth Warner raised on the NH Grants. In May 1780 he was transferred to Col. Herman Swift's Regiment, Capt. Bates' Compnay, in the 2nd Connecticut Line, wheer he served until June 1783, being discharged at Newburg, New York. Wait Hurlbut was present at the Battle of Fort George in the taking of Cornwallis at Georgetown.

His Estate record was filed under the name of Wait Holbert with Probate Court at St Albans 12 April 1826. He was late of Fairfield, and the administrator of his estate was his wife, Beda. His personal estate included 2 hogs, 1 yeahling bull, a chain, 8 sheep, a 70# kettle, pot, refuse dish kettle, tea kettle, baking pan, tongs, an "old table" and one bed and bedding. He also had a 2 year old heifer, 8 bushels potatoes, and a bushel and peck each of wheat and rye. Mentioned was his wearing apparel at $4.25 and a claim for six months and sixteen days pension, valued at $45.00. The entire estate was valued at $98.77, and was being left with his widow for her support and that of her children [Franklin Co, Vt Probate Bk P, page 254-256; LDS Film #028,202].

Census records indicate that we are missing several children. One possibility, until parentage can be proven, is Roswell or Rosel Hurlbut. This Roswell married Lucretia Babcock of St Armand, Quebec in 1811 and Nancy Drew in 1818 at Fairfield. He was at Noyan, Quebec on 17 Oct 1835. Of course, this Hurlbut may tie into Consider Hurlbut's family.

Holt held a very lucrative office of Inspector of Pot and Pearl Ashes in Montreal, where he accumulated considerable property. He received half-pay for nearly 50 years.
