Constance of Arles was born in 986.1 She was the daughter of William I of Provence and Adelaide of Anjou.2,3 Constance of Arles married Robert II of France, son of Hugh Capet and Adelaide of Aquitaine, in 1001; They were married after Robert divorced his second wife, Bertha of Burgandy. It was a stormy marriage as she was not well liked and in 1010, Robert went to Rome with his former wife Bertha, to seek permission to divorce Constance and remarry. Constance pushed sons Henry and Hugh against their father.
When King Robert died in 1031, Constance was at odds with both sons. She seized her dower lands and refused to surrender them. She gave in only when Henri began the seige of Le Puiset and swore to slaughter all inhabitants.1 Constance of Arles died on 25 July 1034.1 She was buried at Saint Denis Basilica, Paris, France.1
