Zenos Carter

     Zenos Carter was born on 24 May 1825 at Cartersville, Duplin Co, North Carolina.^{1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9} He was the son of Daniel Bryant Carter and Nancy Ward Parker. Zenos Carter married Hepsey Cavanaugh, daughter of William Cavanaugh, in 1846.³ Zenos Carter died on 13 November 1914 at Richland, Onslow Co, North Carolina, at age 89; The certificate indicates no physician present and cause was probably old age. Zenos was illiterate according to the field " eduational attainments".^2,10 He was buried on 15 November 1914 at North Carolina.¹⁰
     Zenos Carter was also known as Senos Carter. He appeared on the census of 29 August 1850 at North Division, Duplin Co, North Carolina; Zenos Carter, 23, wife Hepsy, 21, Jesse, 1, and Nancy, 8 mos, living with his parents, Daniel Carter, 53, and wife Nancy, 54.⁷ He appeared on the census of 1 July 1870 at Tuckahoe, Jones Co, North Carolina; Zenos Carter, 46, Hepsey, 45, Jesse, 21, Nancy, 19, Bryant, 15, Herring, 13, Leander, 11, Dealey, 9, James, 7, Job, 5, and Barbara, 3.⁸ He appeared on the census of 1880 at Smith's Twp, Duplin Co, North Carolina; Zenos Carter, 53, James, 20, Zenos, 17 and Barbary, 14.⁴ He appeared on the census of 18 June 1900 at Smith's Twp, Duplin Co, North Carolina; Zenos Carter, 74, b. May 1826, Hepsey, 73, b. Mar 1827, Hattie E., 13, Ellis, 12, Hepsey J., 9, Mattie, 7, and Harvey E., 4. Listed was that he married in 1846 and Hepsey had one child, still living, obviously incorrect. Younger children were grandchildren.³ He appeared on the census of 15 April 1910 at Smith's Twp, Duplin Co, North Carolina; Senas Carter, 84, Hepsey, 82, Mattie, 16, granddau, aand Harvey, 14, grandson. The census showed that they had been married for 65 years, and Hepsey had 9 children, with 5 still living. Zenos was blind.⁵
