Samuel Hawley Salls was born in October 1777 at New Lebanon, Columbia Co, New York. He was the son of Samuel Salls and Rachel (?) Samuel Hawley Salls was baptized on 19 September 1779 at Canaan, Columbia Co, New York; entered in the record as Sam'el Holly Searls.1 He married Phebe (?) circa 1802 at Canaan, Columbia Co, New York. Samuel Hawley Salls married Mary Garfield on 4 April 1826 at Lee, Berkshire Co, Massachusetts; Samuel Hawley Salls was of Canaan, New York at the time of marriage.2 Samuel Hawley Salls died on 17 April 1864 at Canaan, Columbia Co, New York, at age 86. He was buried at Village Cemetery, Canaan, Columbia Co, New York.
Again, to add to much of the confusion over whether the wife of Isaac Salls, Sr was a Hawley or a Holly, or if their name was actually Salls or Searls, the baptism for Samuel was written as Samuel Holly, son of Samuel and Rachel Searls.3 He left a will on 1 June 1863 at Canaan, Columbia Co, New York; Samuel H. Salls left a lot of land of about 4 1/2 acres, $200, one cow, one feather bed and bedding to his adopted daughter, Eveline Leach. His wife Polly received half of their farm, half farming utensils and half the stock. His daughter Phoebe received the other half of the farm, and receiving the entire farm upon his wife's decease. Samuel also left to Margaret Salls, daughter of his brother Isaac the house in New Lebanon then occupied by Edmund Salls. Fifth, Samuel left a lot of land in New Lebanon to his son Erastus B. Salls, as well as a cow. Sixth, was providing his adopted daughter Eveline the use of the home for as long as she wishes. Any remaining property was to go to Phebe F. Salls, his daughter.4
