Robert I of Normandy was born in 1005 at Normandy, France. He was the son of Richard II "the Good" of Normandy and Judith of Brittany. Robert I of Normandy died on 22 June 1035 at Nice, Bithynia, France; It is said by historian William of Malmesbury that William sent a mission in 1086 to bring his father's body back to Normandy. Upon the trip back, after reaching Apulia (Italy), the envoys learned that William had died, and decidedto re-inter his body in Italy.1
Robert was also called "the Magnificent" for his love of finery, and also "the Devil".
When his father died in 1026, his elder brother Richard succeeded, but when Richard died a year later, there were rumors that Robert had Richard murdered.
After making his illegitimate son his heir, he set out on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, but died on the return journey at Nicaea, perhaps by poison.2
