Descendants of John Patterson

Generation One

1. John1 PATTERSON was born before 1700 in Ireland. He married Mary (--?--) in MA. He died (see note within text for further information).

John Patterson and his brother William Patterson were among the Scotch-Irish families from Ulster who arrived at Boston in 1718. They originally must have settled at Worcester, although as of this writing (Mar 1991), this has not been proven or disproven. According to Temple's "History of Palmer", [p. 39] the settlement at Worcester for these folks did not work out as planned and most dispersed to other areas. Our Pattersons went to Palmer, which was also known as "the Elbows" plantation, New Marlborough, and Kingsfield with the earliest, about 1720. Other names, which may prove helpful in further tracking were: Moore, Dunlop, Smith and Thomson. John received 189 acres; he had a grant of 63 acres, lot #2, which was the same as laid out for Andrew Farran, to the west side of Dumplin Hill. After the district was organized he sold his land to Paul Glassford and went in with his brother William on the north side of town.

He was also the same John Patterson of Brookfield, Mass as early as 1728 until about 1755. The earliest land record within Worcester County files for John Patterson is dated 4 February 1728/9, although it was recorded 28 April 1733. In this, Samuel Owen of Brookfield sold to John Patterson also of Brookfield several tracts of land there: 1) a house lot containing 66 acres, 2) a lot containing 25 acres, and 3) one and a half acres of meadow and swamp land. "The History of North Brookfield" by Josiah H. Temple (1887), states that John Patterson "had grant Dec. 5, 1720, of a 60 acre house lot" and on Dec 20th granted to John Patterson and William Hare a stream for a fulling mill (as well as 60 acres apiece) so long as they set up and continued a fulling trade. On the same date they were granted 49 acres near Five-mile river and 71 acres north of Horse-pond brook. Another deed dated 1734 John Patterson sold the house lot of 66 acres to Samuel Barnard. In this record, John is listed as "late of Brookfield, now of Kingsfield, Hampshire County" [Palmer]. The most important deed, however, is dated 1 January 1753 and involves Thomas Taylor of Rutland and John Patterson of Brookfield, "cooper". The land was a tract a piece of land in Rutland district "near a place called Hunting Swamp upon Ware River" referred to as first division Lot #64 in "the westerly or northwesterly quarter of the Township of Rutland" containing 107 acres which Taylor had purchased from Thomas Allen, merchant of Boston, assigned unto William Allen late of Boston. The 2nd tract involved 76 acres part of the "great farm so called #31" and was in the southwest corner of his John Pattersons's meadowland on the North side of the River. Another tract of land containing 16 acres was also located within the Great Farm on Birch Meadow Brook. This deed alone tells us that the John Patterson of Brookfield became the John Patterson of Rutland district. In 1755 John Patterson of Rutland, "cooper" sold for 300 pounds a tract of land containing 178 acres within the land he purchased from Thomas Taylor in 1753 to John Patterson Jr and Jacob Patterson, "husbandmen" of Rutland District.

In "Barre Vital Records to 1850" [part of the official series], it lists under deaths from cemetery inscriptions, John Patterson 25 Nov 1773 about 82 yrs old. When this writer checked the original records of Barre on microfilm, the entry reads "In memory of MRS. John Patterson who died Nov, ye 25th 1773 ae about 82 yrs". The info found here reflects what was found in the handwritten records. At some point, the gravestone should be found (if it still exists) to verify this.

Mary (--?--) was born circa 1691 (info from gravestone). She died on 25 Nov 1773 in Barre, Worcester Co, MA (Cemetery records for Barre, MA). She was buried in Buckminster Yard, Barre, Worcester Co, MA. Other records of Barre pronounce that John Patterson died 25 Nov 1773, but after investigating further, it appears that the actual transcription of the stone reads, " In memory of Mrs. John Patterson who died Nov, ye 25th 1773 ae about 82 years."

Children of John1 Patterson and Mary (--?--) were as follows:

Generation Two

2. John2 PATTERSON Jr (John1) was born on 25 Apr 1724 in Brookfield, Worcester Co, MA. He married Rebecca (--?--) on 7 Dec 1758 in Barre, Worcester Co, MA.

It is evident from a land deed dated 26 Feb 1778 that John Patterson Jr. and his brother Jacob sold 240 acres of land in Barre that John was then living on to Jonathan Danforth with the approval of "Rebecca Patterson, wife of said John and Isabel Patterson wife of said Jacob in token of our free consent...and all our right of dower". It seems likely that this is when both John and Jacob and their families removed to Salem, NY.

Rebecca (--?--) was born before 1738. She married John English before 1754. All that is known at this time (December 1992) is an estate record for John English in 1754 named the administrator as Rebeckah English. A later record dated 3 May 1765 [Book 6, pp 769-770] reads "John Patterson, Gentleman and Rebeckah Patterson his wife both of Rutland District in the County of Worcester and John Rau [of Granville] are administrators on the estate of her late husband John English late of Palmer". Hopefully, future research into the English family will reveal Rebecca's family name. Since she was of Greenwich before her remarriage to John Patterson, that may be a indication her family lived there in 1757 when the intention was filed.

Children of John2 Patterson Jr and Rebecca (--?--) were as follows:

5. Jacob2 PATTERSON (John1) was born circa 1736 in MA. He married Isabel Bell on 15 Jun 1757 in Barre, Worcester Co, MA.

Children of Jacob2 Patterson and Isabel Bell were as follows:

6. David2 PATTERSON (John1) was born circa 1740 in MA.

It is not yet proved that David Patterson was definitely a son of John Patterson. And while we have baptisms for two of his children found within the Barre church records, this writer feels that he might have been a son of William Patterson who arrived from Ireland with brother John Patterson. A very hard to read marriage intention found within the records of Greenwich, Massachusetts show a David "Paterson" of Rutland District and an Elenor R( ? ) of Greenwich. The date was too difficult to read on microfiche, although it was probably ca 1764-1767 like most of the others surrounding it. Perhaps in the future someone may be able to check the original book. It is also possible that this marriage intention involves the same David Patterson who m. Lydia Brattin 11 Feb 1766 at Palmer, Hampden Co, MA. Should this prove the case, this writer would back a different theory: that David Patterson was a son of William Patterson, and perhaps the only child, since Mary, wf of William Patterson d. 1735 at Palmer. The David Patterson who m. Lydia Brattin was supposedly born 1735. The 1740 birthdate for David Patterson who m. Elenor was only estimated by this writer by his marriage date of c1766 and being about 25 yrs old.

Children of David2 Patterson and Elenor R--?-- both born in Barre, Worcester Co, MA, were as follows:

Generation Three

7. Levi3 PATTERSON (John2, John1) married Keziah Horton on 28 Oct 1784 in Sandgate, Benn Co, VT (Sandgate Congregational Church). He died before 1816 (his father-in-law's will made March 1816 said Keziah was his widow).

Very little is known about Levi Patterson. We know he did die before March of 1816 because the Will of his father-in-law states Keziah was a widow at that time. Even his children are not known as no birth or baptismal records have been located. Levi and Keziah are listed as parents on the death certificate of Jehiel Patterson, but the other children listed as theirs is guesswork on the part of the writer.

Children of Levi3 Patterson and Keziah Horton were as follows:

8. Joseph3 PATTERSON (John2, John1) was born circa 1765.

Mary BILLINGS was born in Montague, Franklin Co, MA. She died on 19 Sep 1849 in Sandgate, Bennington Co, VT. She was buried in Cambridge, Washington Co, NY (Woodlands Cemetery).

Children of Joseph3 Patterson and Mary Billings were as follows:

10. Danforth3 PATTERSON (John2, John1) was born circa 1770 in Barre, Worcester Co, MA. He married Chloe Smith, daughter of Moses Smith and Lydia Smith, on 30 May 1792 in New Braintree, Worcester Co, MA. He died on 23 Mar 1832 in Noyan, Missisquoi Co, QC (death record comes from gravestone;no church record found yet). He was buried in St George's Anglican Cemetery, Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, QC.

It appears that immediately after their marriage, Danford & Chloe moved to Vermont, most likely in the area of Franklin County. According to census records their son Frederick was born about 1793 in Vermont, although no substantiating record can be located at this time (1990). By 1797, Danford and family were living in Caldwell's Manor.

In 1830, before the notary J.E. Faribault (#781), Danford Patterson of Noyan, "being desirous of promoting the elementary education & Christian knowledge in the third district of schools in the parish of St Thomas..." gave to Briggs Wait, Jacob Derick and Augustus Longeway in the name of that district "twelve perches of ground off Lot No. 2 in Third Concession of Noyan...without any reservation..." Danford did specify that the gift was made with the condition that the land be used for no other purpose than "elementary school, Sunday School, & used as a place of worship". Another document from Faribault's files in July 1831 (#865) show Danford and Chloe "bind themselves under the mortgage of their present & future property unto Louis Menard" for 25 pounds currency. This land was known as Lot No. 3 in the 3rd Concession of Noyan, being west of Little Creek on Lot No. 2 in Faddentown, bounded on the south by Briggs Wait and to the north by Joseph Longeway. By this time Danford "by reason of infirmities...could not write". His death occurred only eight months later, perhaps giving a clue that he was already in declining health at this time. His date of death comes from the gravestone that once stood at St George's Anglican Cemetery. No record has been located within the church registers of the area.

In March of 1835, before Leon Lalanne, notary, Chloe Smith Patterson states that her husband "made and published his last Will & Testament, which she says she cannot produce, it lying yet in the office of the notary before whom it was executed". It does not say who that notary was. She acknowledges that her late husband willed his entire half of their mutually owned property to her upon his death. She, in turn, is donating to her "beloved son Frederick" all property with the condition that he must pay off all debts, support and maintain her until her death, and after her death divide the property according to Danford's last wishes between himself and the other co-heirs.

Chloe SMITH was born on 8 Aug 1774 in Barre, Worcester Co, MA. She died on 5 Apr 1836 in Noyan, Missisquoi Co, QC, at age 61.1 She was buried on 7 Apr 1836.2

Children of Danforth3 Patterson and Chloe Smith were as follows:

11. John3 PATTERSON (John2, John1) was born circa 1773 in prob Barre, Worcester Co, MA. He married Susanna McCracken, daughter of Joseph McCracken, Col. and Sarah Turner, on 6 Jan 1820 (marr date found with a Hist of Wash Co by Virginia Emrey). He died on 19 May 1848 in Bangor, Franklin Co, NY. He was buried in Keeler Cemetery, Bangor, Franklin Co, NY.3

John is referred to as Captain John Patterson on the gravestone of his first wife, Sally. Documentation needs to be located giving us his service record, probably during the War of 1812.

Sally (--?--) was born circa 1771. She died on 9 Jul 1819 in Georgia, Franklin Co, VT. She was buried in Evarts Cem, Georgia, Franklin Co, VT. A probate record, located within Abstracts of Wills of Dutchess County NY, 1752-1814, [indexed by Elijah E. Brownell, Philadelphia, PA, 1941] mentions (p.346) that Thomas Mitchell, Esquire of Poughkeepsie mention sdaughter Sally, wife of John Patterson. This record was written 17 Jan 1803 and recorded 20 Dec 1804. Others mentioned were daughters Hannah, wife of joseph Brewer; Elizabeth, wife of Archibald Campbell and others. Writer does not know for sure that this is the Sally who married this John Patterson (1773-1848).

Children of John3 Patterson and Sally (--?--) were as follows:

Susanna MCCRACKEN was born circa 1774 in prob Wash Co, NY. She died on 1 Dec 1858 in Bangor, Franklin Co, NY. She was buried in Keeler Hill Cemetery, Bangor, Franklin Co, NY.4

There were no children of John3 Patterson and Susanna McCracken.

12. Ezra3 PATTERSON (Jacob2, John1) was born circa 1762 in Barre, Worcester Co, MA. He died on 24 Aug 1829 in Pittsford, Monroe Co, NY. He was buried in Pittsford Cem, Pittsford, NY.

According to the book "Northfield on the Genesee...Early Times in Monroe Co., NY", published in 1981, Ezra Patterson had great influence on the pioneer town on Pittsford when he arrived about 1790 with the Stone family and others from Salem, NY. "With his brother-in-law Paul Richardson, he took an intense interest in the political, intellectual and cultural life of the community, serving it in almost every conceivable capacity." He was elected treasurer as well as librarian of the Northfield Library. Today (1991), in front of the Pittsford Junior High School stands a state historical marker: "First library, Northfield Library Company, 1803-1809, kept its books at the farm of Ezra Patterson, first librarian". Ezra also served as a Major during the War of 1812 and served as a trustee in the Congregational Society.

Children of Ezra3 Patterson and Elizabeth ? (--?--) were:

13. Lucy3 PATTERSON (Jacob2, John1) was born circa 1768 in Barre, Worcester Co, NY. She married Israel Stone before 1789 in Salem, Washington Co, NY. She married Paul Richardson before 1802. She died after 1839 in Monroe Co, NY.

An account of Lucy Patterson and her four husbands found within the book "Northfield on the Genesee..." tells that she spent years trying to collect money for her dower rights on land that Israel Stone sold to early settlers. "Eventually a law requiring dower demands must be made within 20 yrs was passed." It was not retroactive, so did not help Lucy, and settlers used the law to stop her demands. Lucy did not participate in community activities, nor did she join any church. There is no record of her burial or that of her four husbands.

Israel STONE was born on 9 Apr 1760 in Greenwich, Worcester Co, MA. He died in 1795 in Pittsford, Monroe Co, NY. Israel Stone is also written about in "Northfield on the Genesee.." as he was one of the co-purchasers of Pittsford. There is a state marker which says "The first house in Pittsford Village was erected on this spot by Israel Stone in 1789."

Children of Lucy3 Patterson and Israel Stone were as follows:

Paul RICHARDSON died in 1802 in Pittsford, Monroe Co, NY. Paul Richardson was among those who left Salem, NY with the Stone family to arrive in Pittsford about 1790. It was at his house that Pittsford's very first town meeting was held. He may have had a son Giles Blodgett Richardson, born in 1797 by a marriage previous to his marriage to Lucy Patterson Stone.

There were no children of Lucy3 Patterson and Paul Richardson.

16. Hutchinson3 PATTERSON (Jacob2, John1) was born circa 1774 in Barre, Worcester Co, MA. He died in Monroe Mills, Knox Co, OH.

There were supposedly six or seven children born to Hutchinson Patterson, but at this writing (1991), only two are known. From land records one could guess that others might include Mahala, Aaron and Sabrah. Further investigation is definitely needed in this area.

Betsy STONE was born circa 1776 in MA. She died after 1830.

Children of Hutchinson3 Patterson and Betsy Stone both born in Pittsford, Monroe Co, NY, were as follows:

17. Eli3 PATTERSON (Jacob2, John1) was born circa 1776 in Barre, Worcester Co, MA. He married Eleanor (--?--). He died on 13 Jun 1860 in Pittsford, Monroe Co, NY. He was buried in Pioneer Burying Ground, Pittsford, Monroe Co, NY.

"Albert Forrest Longeway, M.D. of Great Falls Montana is a native of Dunham, Province of Quebec, born April 6, 1865. Dr. Longeway is of French descent, his ancestors being among the early settlers of Canada. His father, George R. Longeway, was born in Clarenceville, Canada, December 13, 1825. When the California gold fever spread over the country he was one of the victims and in 1850 he sought the new El Dorado of the West. After a few years spent in the placer mines of California he returned to his native country, bringing with him a good supply of gold with which he purchased a farm. On this farm he resided until recently when he retired and moved into town. His wife was Mary Jane Derrick and she too is a native of Clarenceville. They have had five children of whom Albert F. is the third. Four are still living. The subject of our sketch had excellent educational advantages. He graduated at the McGill Normal School in 1882, then he took a four year course in medicine at Bishop College in Montreal, and graduated at that institution in 1886. His high standing in college and the proficiency he displayed at a special examination in surgery won for him two gold medals. After graduating Dr. Longeway entered his professional career at Highgate Springs. Soon, however, he returned to Montreal and accepted the position of assistant demonstrator of anatomy in Bishop College. At the same time he servedas attending physician at the Montreal Dispensary. A year later he decided to seek a location in the West.

When he reached St. Louis he was still undecided where to go, having in view both El Paso, Texas and Butte City Montana. He flipped a nickel to decide the matter. The choice fell to the latter place, and he arrived in Butte City on the 4th of July 1887. The railroad was then being built to Great Falls and this place offered many inducements for him to locate here. Two other physicians were in practice here when he opened his office. From the very first he met with success and soon established a large and lucrative practice. Dr. Longeway was married August 23, 1889 to Miss Gertrude Welch, a native of Stanbridge, Province of Quebec and a daughter of Ira A. Welsh of that place. They have four children, Albertine Ada, Estella, Josephine Theodore,Gertrude and Albert F. Jr."
