1. Thomas1 SHARPE Sr was born circa 1699. He married Isabella Wallace circa 1716. He died on 15 Dec 1749 in Cecil Co, MD. He was buried in Sharpe's Graveyard, Cecil Co, MD.
There was a deed from John Sharpe and wife Mary of Elk River to Thomas Clifton of same for 100 acres on the east side of Elk River, part of a tract formerlly called Thompson's Town where said John Sharpe now lives, made 16 Nov 1699. Who was John Sharpe?1 In 1720, Thomas Sharpe, Sr was listed as an elder in the Rock Creek Church of Cecil County, Maryland. The Sharpes had settled in Fair Hill, Cecil County before 1718 and had named their plantation "Sharpe's Industry".
Thomas Sharpe was a member of the Cecil County Committee of Safety. He had also helped establish the Rock Creek Church and donated land to be used for Sharpe's Graveyard, nearby. He served as an elder for the church and remained so until his death in 1749. In 1735, on March 10th, William Sharp purchased land called "Confusion" (75 acres). Thomas Sharpe's will was dated 9 January 1748, and he was noted as a "yeoman".
There is reason to suspect that our Thomas Sharpe was actually son of Thomas Sharp of Newton, Gloucester County, New Jersey. He was known to be a yeoman, Quaker and surveyor. In the book "First Settlers of Newton Township, NJ" by John Clement, printed Camden, NJ, 1877, there is a biography of Thomas Sharp of that place, and in the back of the book is a map of the area done by his hand. Considering the fine map of Fourth's Congregation in 1773 done by William Sharp, it can be thoughtfully considered that the two might be related.
Thomas Sharp of Newton Township left a will dated 5 August 1724. He provides for his widow, and his son Thomas, along with other children: John Sharp, Elizabeth Hallowell, Mary Smith, Sarah Pearce, Samuel Sharp and Joseph Sharp, who is disabled.
A great deal more research in this area should be done in order to either prove, or disprove, this idea. Charles Carroll of Annapolis, esq., to Thomas Sharpe of Cecil Co., planter, 261 acres of land, part of a tract called the Society. Charles Carroll, esq., father of the said Charles Carroll, by deed dated 20 May 1719, conveyed to the said Thomas Sharpe by the name of Guiell Glass, 244 acres, part of the tract called the Society, the former sale, through some mistake of the surveyor, not included in the land. Charles Carroll wants the said Thomas Sharpe to have the benefit of teh original intention of his said father. Made 27 Dec 1723. Wit: John Diggs, Char. Daniell. Ackn: 31 Dec 1723. JP: Samuel Young. Rec: 17 Mar 1723. S. Knight, clerk.2
Isabella WALLACE was born circa 1700. She was born in 1706 (according to her gravestone, which read ae 73). She died on 22 Dec 1779 in Cecil Co, MD. She was buried in Sharpe's Graveyard, Cecil Co, MD.

Not only did William Sharpe serve as a soldier during the Revolution, but he also served in the Continental Congress from 1779-1782 and was a member of the State House of Representatives during those same years. He was a member of the State Congress from Rowan County in 1775. It is obvious the man enjoyed public service - while in Iredell County he was the county surveyor, assistant clerk of court, and a lawyer. In North Carolina's State Records Volume XVI, his name appears with four others who were being considered for the office of Governor of North Carolina.
William's map of the Fourth Creek Congregation in 1773 serves to document the 169 families of that area. He is also credited with laying out the original streets of Staesville, North Carolina - Broad and Center Streets. Sharpesburg was also named after him. His father-in-law, David Reese, was one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Walter Sharpe was a Lieutenant during the Revolution and while it is believed that he was killed in the Battle of Ramsours Mill, the actual place of death has yet to be determined. He and his wife had lived near Rocky Face Mountain, which later became part of Alexander County.
Joseph Sharpe also served during the Revolution and became a Captain. For his service, he received large grants of land in both Iredell County and Alexander County. The grants were for the use of his iron works on Rocky Creek.

Supposedly John Fielding Wallace and his New York wife, Sarah Kerr. lived in Athens, Georgia where he operated an academy.
Amos and his wife Martha are said to have lived in Gibson County, Tennessee.
John Sharpe and his wife, Lilly McCoy, moved to Iredell County, North Carolina sometime shortly before the Revolutionary War. John and several of his brothers who had also come to North Carolina served time during the War - he, as a Private.
John's home was a large plantation about a half-mile north of the South Yadkin River on the Island Ford-Shallow Ford Road in what eventually became Sharpesburg Township, near the present Route 115. He left the plantation along with "Negroes Jack, Steven, Philis and Philis's child Eliza". To his son David, he left the 200 acres on which he currently lived and a slave named "Ande". To James McCoy (written McKay in the will) he left the 200 acres on which he lived. To his son Silas he left a slave named Isaac. John did not name his daughters but did list sons-in-law: Dr. Joseph Guy, Jacob Hovatter - to which he left a slave a piece. All five children were to divide 4 other slaves, "Jack, Agg, Anny and Mary".
In addition to this home plantation, John owned several other tracts of land, but he was not the land owner that other members of his family were. He operated his farm with the help of several slaves, one of whom was Stephen who remained with the family over the years. John stated in his Will that Stephen should remain with his wife or with his son, James McCoy Sharpe.
Soon after their arrival in North Carolina, John and Lilly became members of the old Fourth Creek Presbyterian Church at an area which would become Statesville. When Bethany Presbyterian was organized in the mid 1770's, the Sharpe brothers joined, but it was still quite a ways from home. They finally became associated with Snow Creek Methodist Church, which was built near their homes. From this time on, most of their descendants became members of the Methodist Church.
Lilly MCCOY was born on 11 Jun 1743 in Cecil Co, MD. She died in 1818 in Iredell Co, NC. She was buried in Iredell Co, NC (Snow Creek Methodist Church Cemetery).

James McCoy Sharpe was born in what was to later become Sharpesburg Township.
Little is known about the life of James McCoy Sharpe since he kept himself out of the public eye, unlike several others of his family. He was a tanner and their tanning mill was on a small stream which ran between his house and that of his father.
After James died in 1816, his wife relinquished her right to administration. His brother-in-law was appointed administrator and Andrew Adams was appointed guardian to his minor children. Elizabeth, his widow, was granted allowance for herself and children for one year. His land was divided between his children after Elizabeth's dower was paid. The remainder of his estate was sold off at auction, the furniture being purchased by Elizabeth for herself and family. For many years after her husband's death, Elizabeth lived with her daughter Rebecca, who never married.

According to the book, "The Civil War and Yadkin County, North Carolina", he had two sons who married in Yadkin in 1900: Eddy and James. It is more likely these were grandchildren. They both married women named Benge. On page 166 of the book, a table listing veterans and/or widows who drew pensions, was W.F. Cloer. It also mentioned "helpless, burns". The info indicates he served in Company E, 49th Regiment. The writer will have to try to substantiate this with records. As of 1925, he was also known as Falls Chlore As noted on his death certificate.
Children of Almeda6 Sharpe and Falls Washington Cloer were as follows:
