Descendants of George Wait

Generation One

1. George1 WAIT was born on 22 Mar 1749 at Exeter, Washington Co, Rhode Island. He married Elizabeth (--?--).
There is no absolute proof that this George Wait is the father to our Briggs and Enoch. The only info to be located on him is his birth in the Exeter records. However, it is definitely known that George's brothers Jonathan and Benjamin did settle in the area of Canaan. So when it is noted that both brothers and a George Wait were of Kings District (Canaan/New Lebanon area) as of a 1779 tax listing, it can only be surmised that this George is their younger brother.
Baptisms for both Enoch and Briggs Wait at Clarenceville, Quebec in 1815, say they are sons of George & Elizabeth Wait of "New Canaan" in the state of New York. As of this writing (1991), I cannot locate any evidence to substantiate they were alive in Canaan in 1815 or were buried in Canaan. In 1800, son Briggs Wait was of Clinton, Dutchess County, New York. While there is little to indicate that George and Elizabeth Wait may have been there as well, a listing of many of the names mentioned in the Abel Peters' estate ca 1800, does list one George Wait. Many of those names listed were of Clinton Corners and area in Dutchess County. More research is necessary in this area to locate any information about George Wait.

Elizabeth (--?--). Many suggestions have been made about Elizabeth's background. It is quite possible that she is a Briggs or even a Salls. The Salls and the Waits were so close over the years there is a hint that they were familiar with each other back in Canaan in the 1770's. Perhaps since Hix Salls (b. 1752) married a Mary Briggs, presumably in the Canaan area, that the relationship comes from her being a sister to Elizabeth who married George Wait. That would help explain the numerous occurances of the names Briggs and Hix within both families.
Children of George1 Wait and Elizabeth (--?--) both born at Canaan, Columbia Co, New York, were as follows:

Generation Two

2. Enoch2 WAIT (George1) was born on 24 May 1776 at Canaan, Columbia Co, New York. He was baptized on 6 Aug 1815 at Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.1 He married Sarah Salls, daughter of Jacob Salls and Margaret Taylor, circa 1814. He died on 2 Oct 1856 at Lingwick, Compton Co, Quebec, at age 80. He was buried on 3 Oct 1856 at Presbyterian Cemetery, Lingwick, Compton Co, Quebec.
At this point, it is not yet known when and where Enoch Wait met and married Sarah Salls. Once again the fact arises that the Wait and Salls families were close. It is also evident that Enoch and wf Sarah were close to the Gorham family while still in Noyan - although whether it was just a friendship or actual relation through the Wait line is, again, a mystery. While they named a daughter Hannah Paulina Gorham Wait in 1824, Jonathan Gorham and wf Sophia named a daughter Sarah Paulina Wait Gorham in 1807.
Enoch Wait served as a Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Marines along with his brother in law, Jacob S. Salls, a private. It was upon this service that Enoch applied, in 1829, along with Samuel H. Fargo, for land in the township of Bury. In a later document dated 1836 he gives further info on this grant. He was given "Lot #19 in the 6th Range in Bury and commenced settlement...in 1829; and has made it the permanent residence of himself and family since February 1832". Due to lack of proper markings, Enoch Wait made a mistake, and, inadvertantly settled on Lots 7 & 8 in the 6th Range. This came to light in 1830 and he made repeated appeals to Governor James Kempt for help. By 1836 he already had spent upwards of six years working on it and now had cultivated 30 acres, planted an orchard, erected several buildings, and had made and maintained a road through the wilderness spanning six miles. The situation became desperate when the British American Land Company began operating nearby, and even erected buildings on his cleared land, making it known their intentions to reserve the lots he had thought were his own. He was finally informed that he would be allowed to exchange or purchase the land on which he had settled at his option. As yet, no further documentation has been located as to the final outcome, or as to any other later land transactions.

Sarah SALLS was born on 3 Apr 1786. She was baptized on 27 Feb 1787 at Canaan, Columbia Co, New York.2 She died on 15 Aug 1865 at Lingwick, Compton Co, Quebec, at age 79. She was buried on 16 Aug 1865 at Presbyterian Cemetery, Lingwick, Compton Co, Quebec.
Children of Enoch2 Wait and Sarah Salls were as follows:

3. Briggs2 WAIT (George1) was born on 26 Feb 1778 at Canaan, Columbia Co, New York.7 He was baptized on 6 Aug 1815 at Caldwell's Manor, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.8 He married Mary Sheer/Shier circa 1798. He married Jane Longeway, daughter of Remie Longeway and Genevive Raimond, on 11 Oct 1821 at Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.9 He died on 6 Nov 1869 at age 91; This date comes from the Tryon Family Bible held by Janice Fraser, 1990. He died on 7 Oct 1876 at age 98; date comes from gravestone; death record has not been located.10 He was buried at Marlington Cemetery, Stanstead, Stanstead Co, Quebec.11
One can only speculate what brought Briggs Wait and his new family to Quebec. There has been a long standing relationship between the Waits and the Salls found within church records at Clarenceville as well as the fact that both families must have lived at Canaan at approximately the same time. But the Salls family moved to Canada by the 1780's and Briggs Wait was still in New York as a child at that time. Was word sent back by the Salls to the Waits in Canaan that there was plenty of land available and that prompted Briggs to leave New York about 1801? We shall probably never know. He appeared on the census of 1800 at Clinton, Dutchess Co, New York; Briggs Wait is located in the 1800 census of Clinton, Dutchess County, New York. At this time there was Briggs, under 26, his wife Mary under 26, and one daughter under 10, presumably Elizabeth who was born 1790. He appeared on the census of 1861 at Stanstead, Stanstead Co, Quebec; Briggs Wait was aged 83 years, born US, living with his daughter Almeda and her husband, Daniel Tryon, and family.

Mary SHEER/SHIER was born in Mar 1776. She died on 6 Mar 1820 at Christie's Manor, (now Missisquoi Co), Quebec. She was buried at St George's Anglican Cemetery, Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec. It is not positively known just what Mary's last name really was. In one document it is listed as Sheer or Shier, and another as Shelt. The document showing "Mary Shelt our grandmother" was located in Franklin County Deeds, Vol 34, pp. 80-81, and was dated 1862. This was a Quitclaim Release involving Lot #1 in the First Concession on Indian Point within the Seigniory of Noyan. Some 42 years had passed since her death, and it is anyone's guess as to which name is more correct, the Shelt found in NY records or Sheer/Shier in Quebec records relating to the same land.
A quick checking of "Sh" names in the area of Clinton, Dutchess County, New York does bring forth a Lewis Shear, Uriah Shear, and John B. Shearer, all found within the Abel Peters' estate file of 1803 in that area. It may be assumed that Briggs Wait married somewhere between Canaan, Columbia County and Clinton, Dutchess County and these Shears may prove to be connected to Mary. Again, alot of research is needed in this line of pursuit.
Children of Briggs2 Wait and Mary Sheer/Shier were as follows:

Jane LONGEWAY was born on 21 Oct 1787. She was baptized on 22 Oct 1787 at St Mathias, Rouville Co, Quebec; Godparents were Pierre Lacasse and Marie Raymond. She married Stephen Nokes before 1811. Waite was born 10 Aug 1823, was aged 77, and living with son Frank J., 38, b. 21 Mar 1863 which does not coincide with birth records for John Francis Wait. But the fact that they were living with James Wait, son of Enoch and Emily Wait points to the fact that it must be the same family. James' fater-in-law, Aber Jewell, was also present, next door. I will leave this info here until proven otherwise. Stanstead County records need to be searched.31

Feb. 21, 1946 - The Stanstead Journal ---
Thursday, Feb. 28, will be the one hundred and second birthday anniversary of Beebes, indeed we may say Stanstead Countys, grand old lady, Mrs. Emma (Tryon) Moir. It will be recalled that on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday anniversary, she was accorded an unusual demonstration of popular good will and esteem, receiving more than three hundred messages of congratulations and good wishes, including those of their Majesties, the King and Queen, The Governor General of Canada, Lieut. Governor of the Province of Quebec, Prime Minister King and Hon. Adelard Godbout, then Premier of Quebec; Senator C.B.Howard and a host of other more or less prominent people. Her multitude of admirers and friends are widely scattered over the continent.
This writer, having business in Beebe, recently called at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Boulais, her son in law and daughter, with whom she has resided for many years, to inquire about her health. He found her looking and feeling well, seemingly not a day older than on her one hundredth birthday anniversary.
