Martha Jane Horrell

  General Notes:

Martha Jane was known at one time as "Mattie Jane". She later referred to herself as "Jane".

Sometime after the death of Bland, she sold her home and part of her land to Bland's sister, Ethea and her husband, Lemuel Rich.

Jane live in a small house directly across the road from her daughter, Ella Lee Wallace Barnhill. Ella Lee's husband Don had wanted to purchase the property from his mother-in-law, but she refused to sell it to him. May have had concerns about his finances. In any case, I am told that he never forgave his mother-in-law and if she came to his house to the front door, he would leave out the back door.

When she died, she had been living with her adopted son Arthur and his wife Edith Highsmith Wallace.

The house they lived was located right next to the old store which belonged to Robert Tate Henry.

She had 23 grandchildren when she died in 1958.

She was referred to as "Grandmammy" by her grandchildren who knew her.

I can't remember much about her myself, only that after we moved back to Atkinson in 1957 I was walking from my home in Atkinson up Beatty's Bridge road and stopped to talk to my aunt Edith and my great grandma Jane. Jane was almost blind and couldn't see well at all. I came up to the porch and Aunt Edith asked her if she recognized me and then told her who I was. She asked me to come closer and she took her hands to my face to feel my features.

The only other vague memory I have is when she died, the wake was in her home. I was only about 12 years old.
