----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Daniel Cone was possibly the first of the name in America. His birthplace has not been found, nor has the exact date of his birth been ascertained. . . . The first mention of Daniel Cone . . . is in a letter from John Winthrop, Junior, Governor of the Connecticut Colony, to Peter Stuyvesant, Governor of New Netherlands, dated March 2, 1657 (concerning a debt of one John Cockrill for whom Daniel had stood bound, upon which Cockrill escaped to New Netherlands). . . .

The next we hear of him is in the spring of 1662, when he appears as one of the twenty-eight persons who received from the Connecticut Colony a grant of land situated on both sides of the Connecticut river, about thirty miles above its mouth. . . . The town was called Haddam. . . . Daniel Cone received his allotment of four acres on the town site, on the west side of the river, with land in the "meadow" and timbered land adjoining, in 1662, and removed thereon the same season.

He resided in Haddam until 1680, when he removed to the east side of the river, to near "Machi-Moodus." About the year 1695 he returned to Haddam, where he died, October 24, 1706, "aged 80 years." He was Commissioner for his town in 1669, and held other minor offices. . . .

Notes for Jared Cone:

The statement that he (Jared Cone) married, probably at Hartford, Sarah Olmstead (Samuel, Nicholas, James) is certainly untrue. She married some one by the name of Cone, probably his brother Ebenezer, and received land in 1726 from her father’s estate under than name, but the court settlement of the estate of Jared Cone in 1718 gives evidence that he left no widow. - Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines, Vol. II., p. 235.

More About Ebenezer Cone:

Notes for Sarah Olmsted:

Ebenezer (Cone) probably married Sarah Olmstead (Samuel, Nicholas, James). This woman definitely married some Cone, for in the distribution of her father’s estate in 1726, she was called “Sarah Cone” and every other contemporary Cone than Ebenezer is otherwise provided with a wife. Moreover, if he married thus, his youngest son, Samuel, would have been named for the wife’s father and this Samuel would have had good reason to name a son Joseph “Olmstead” Cone, as he did so. Further, Ebenezer Cone may likely have been the father of the Noadiah and Rachel sometimes erroneously assigned to our Jared Cone. This seems the more probably since Rachel Cone named a son Ebenezer. - Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines, Vol. II., pp. 234-235.
