" James born c 1750 probably in Maryland and was probably son of James & Mary (Price) Wells original from Delaware and later Pennsylvania. May have been one of his parents 10 children. as there had been a Will probated in Surry County,N.C. in January 1810 for James Wells which named as heir, his wife,Mary, his sons James, Thomas, Newman (spelled Numan) who married 18 Feb 1784 Rebecca Edwards, John, who probably married twice, first 5 Jan 1801 Mary Littie (spelled as Lyttie) and second 14 Oct 1815 Frances Gergory (spelled as Grigory), and his daughters Elizabeth Reese (spelled as Riece), Rachel, wife of Thomas Hutchins , Lucetia Witty, Susannah Rash, Marin Wells & Mary, wife of Samuel Beck.
Will James Wells jr "dated 25 Jan 1810 Probated in Surry County NC November 1810 which named as heirs his wife, Mary, his sons :James, Thomas, Elizabeth Riece, Lucretia Witty, Newman (spelled Numan) who married 18 Feb 1794 Rebecca Edwards,Rachel Hutchens, Susanna Rash, John Wells, Marian Wells and Mary Beck."
Census Clark Co Ind 1850 Francis eldest son James by his first wife was born in Conn
SCCJ " James Wells was the son of James Wells jr and brother of Thomas Wells and
Numan Wells.
It seems likely that James Wells was the oldest of these eight children inasmuch as
the will left to this James Wells "all my land and tenements and also one half of my moveable property. Joseph Clifford, son of John Clifford and Rachel his wife married Susanah Wells, daughter of James Wells and Rachel his wife, whose maiden name was Horne. Grandmother Horn's maiden name was Moffet. She Rachel Wells was left a widow in early life. James Wells was the son of James Wells and brother of Thomas Wells and Numan Wells. These went from Maryland to N.C." He died before 5 Nov 1810 in Rowan (Iredell) Co., NC. (249)(199) Probate "Record of Admistration of James Wells estate on Nov 5 1810 died intestate Rowen Co NC Rebecca Wells his widow renounces to James Wells .next of kin to dec'd " 1775 (Copy and Extract on hand)
SCCJ "James Wells died intestate in Rowan Co., NC in 1810. There is a record of the administration of the estate of James Wells in Rowan Co., NC on 5 Nov 1810. The administrators of his estate were his widow, Rachel Wells, and his son-in-law, Joseph Clifford. James Wells was the son of another James Wells; I have not identified James Wells' mother.
This couple were my fourth great grandparents.
James Wells died in Surry Co., NC >in 1810; his will, dated 25 Jan 1810, was probated in Surry Co., NC in the Nov, 1810 term. His will identified his wife, Mary, and ten children.
The will lists James' children in the following order: Thomas Wells,Elizabeth Riece, Lucretia Witty, Nunam Wells, Rachel Hutchens, Susannah Rash, John Wells, Marian Wells, Mary Beck and James Wells. It seems likely that James Wells was the oldest of these eight children inasmuch as the will left to this James Wells "all my land and tenements and also one half of my moveable property."
Hertiage of Rowan Co. James born c 1750, may have first married in Connectict, as it has been known from 1850 Census of NC his probable eldest child and son, Francis by his first wife was born there. And on basis of birth year of his daughter,Susannah, by his second wife, it could fairly be assumed that he and his first family migrated to Rowan County pror to 1785. Shortly after arriving his first wife may hve died, and probably by 1785 James remarried and had second frmily.A listing was not found for him in the 1790 census either in Rowan or Surry County; however, he was enumerated in the 1810 Census which revealed 5 males and 4 females in his householdl. His land & home was situated in one of places along Duchman's Creek. As it had been found as record of Administration of estate for James Wells on Nov. 5, 1810, it seems quite probable he had died in the same year. His Father did. Hence, quite as while before his second wife, Rachel Horn, died
Marguerite Wells McKenzie says "That James first wife could be Sarah Keith, There is a ? She could find no data showing this, other than a couple of researches names her as his fist wife. But, then one of them who is said to be related says that he is a descendant of Francis, but that the father of Francis was William???
A.E. His estate was adm.in Rowan Co. on 5 Nov 1810 the adm. of the estate being his widow,Rachel, and his son in law Joseph Clifford. He owned land on Dutchman's Creek in Rowan Co as early as 1795 and he was listed in the 1800 Rowan CoC census. In 1801 he sold a portion of his Rowan Co. land to his son Francis Wells, and on 29 Mar 1808 he sold another portion of that land to his son James Wells jr. In the 1815 Rowan Co tax there was a listing for James S. Wells Deceased, by R. Wells.Adm. as owner of 243 acres of land.
From: Libby Lambert <[email protected]>My father is Lemuel Addison Wells, Jr. 926-1997; his father: Lemuel Addison Wells, Sr. 1905-1983; his father: Addison Irving Wells, 1869-1945; his father: William David Wells, 1824-1891; his father : William Wells, 1800-1871; his father : James Wells, Sr. 1750-1810, etc.
SCCJ "I don't>know just when James Wells moved to North Carolina; the first record I
have found for him is his entry onto a tract of land in Surry Co., NC on 5 Apr 1787. This portion of Surry Co., NC is in present-day Yadkin Co., NC and was located quite near the border with that portion of Rowan Co., NC that later became Davie Co., NC.

He was married to Sarah KEITH ? about 1778 in Connecticut. (153)(59) (200) (198) Census Silver Creek Township 1850 HH 109/109 Clark Co.,Indiana birth place for Francis Wells, son of James Wells and his first wife, is Connecticut.
Margurete " the first wife of James Wells could be Sarah Keith. In the Wells family Records one of the families named Keith were neighbors of the Wells family.
Don Harp " James Wells born 1750 married to Mary Moffet/Moffit/Moffat. As the Moffiit's had several marriages into the Wells familes of Virginia/"

I donot know when or where they were married but I think it is likely that they married in Rowan Co., NC, since their first child, Susannah, was bornin Rowan Co., NC
Hertage James Wells & Family pg.943 " Joseph Clifford, son of John Clifford and Rachel his wife married Susanah Wells, daughter of James Wells and Rachel his wife, whose maiden name was Horne Grandmother Horn's maiden name was Moffet. She Rachel Wells was left a widow in early life. "
Rachel HORNE(153) died after 1830 in Silver Creek Township, Clark Co., IN. (153) Heartiage "as Rachel was still enumerated in 1820 census of Rowan county and listed in 1830 Tax list as owner of 43 acres, her death date can't be accounted for but was probably after 1830. Heritage "She and James had 6 children, Susannah b 6 Sep 1787 d. May 1863, Elizabeth c 1791-?, John b 27 Apr 1795, William b.1800 d 1871, Rebecca b c1801, Robert b.16 Jan 1803?.
