According to family members, he was always busy with some new contraption or the other and was a “workaholic.” He had to be fiddling with something or the other. I remember visiting his home once, and he had a peanut patch and constantly telling us not to step on his peanut vines. He first lived in Drew Co., but eventually moved to Promised Land Community in Ashley Co. near Mist, AR. He was a member of the Promised Land Baptist Church and is buried in the Promised Land Cemetery, along with William Washington (Billy) Wells and his brother, Norman Melville Wells.

She was buried. (282) Beth "Elma Pearl Wells and Charlie Allen (Bud) Thurman are buried in Lacey Cem. in Veasey Twp. in Drew Co., AR. Beth ".Elma Pearl Wells was a member of Prairie Grove Baptist Church and often played the organ. As a school child, her brother Norman and she were known as the best spellers from the Prairie Grove School. Supposedly, their widowed father, William Washington (Billy) WELLS worked with them often on their school work and was even listed as an occasional substitute teacher in a l905 ledger for Drew County Schools. He also was the one who taught Pearl to play the organ. According to my other grandparents, the Wolfes, he was an excellent song leader, fiddle player, and Sunday School teacher at the Prairie Grove Church, as well as being a member of the Masonic Lodge. Before the lodge at Ladelle was formed after 1913, he walked the six miles to Lacey to Masonic Lodge meetings. His daughter said he did a lot of walking. Each year, he would walk to Dermott and catch a train back and forth to Illinois. Often, he would have to walk between the different connections to get back to Hillview.
The Wolfes also said that he told them the reason he left Illinois was to get his children away from the Catholic influence of his wife's people. However, his son, Harley Wells, said he had never heard this story. He said that his father had read of cheap land in a newspaper advertisement and had gone to Arkansas to check this out. All the members of the Wolfe family referred to William Washington (Billy) Wells as Uncle Billy. They thought he was a very knowledgeable and influential member of the community.
Once, when my great-uncle on my grandmother Wolfe's side, Thomas Adam Lagrone, was "churched" for drinking, they said that Uncle Billy went to see him to get him to apologize to the church to get reinstated. Supposedly, Uncle Add was plowing, and would not quit and was not going to apologize. Uncle Billy kept following him up and down the rows. Finally, Uncle Add stopped and asked him if he were going to follow him up and down the rows all day, and Uncle Billy said, "No," only until you say you are going to come back and get reinstated in the church by apologizing. Supposedly, Uncle Add said that if this were what it took for Uncle Billy to go on and let him get some work done, then he would see him on Sunday.1
